James Talarico: I am not running for the U.S. Senate to represent New York or California. I'm not running for the U.S. Senate to represent the Democratic Party. I am running for Senate to represent all 31 million Texans, and I will always do what's best for Texas, even if that means standing up to my own party. If the Democratic Party is going after the good-paying oil and gas jobs here in Texas, I'm going to stand up against them. I was able to pass 60 bipartisan bills during my time in the legislature, and the only way I could pass those bills is by working with Republicans. I'm a proud Texas Democrat, but I already have a religion and I already have a sports team. You can look at my record in the legislature and see that I always did what was best for my district, even if it meant pissing off my own party, and that's exactly what I'm going to do in the U.S. Senate.

.James Talarico: I want to get back to the kind of capitalism we had in the middle of the 20th century in this country. I want competition, but it’s got to be fair competition. We’ve got to take on these monopolies, this consolidation, because again it’s fundamentally anti-capitalist. Right now, our tax system literally taxes work more than it taxes wealth. I’m advocating for a return to original capitalist principles where we actually reward work instead of wealth—an economy that creates fewer trillionaires and more millionaires.

.James Talarico: The richest man in the world is dumping hundreds of millions of dollars into this state to try to defame me, so I'm doing everything I can to stand up against those lies. I am tired of us being divided into teams because the truth is we're all on the same team. We are far more the same than we are different, but those big money interests, those social media platforms, and those cable news networks want to divide us. Imagine what we could do if we did it together as one team—we are unstoppable.

Undecided Texas voter: I was really impressed with Talarico this evening. I found a more balanced politician. I was surprised at how centrist he was on many of the issues, and I think that has brought me to a deeper understanding. I liked that he responded to me. I like that he invited us to sit down and challenge him.

.James Talarico: I’m an 8th generation Texan. I went to public schools here in Texas that were funded by the oil and gas industry, so I owe a lot to that industry. I’m campaigning on an all-of-the-above energy strategy that includes oil and gas. I want to protect good-paying oil and gas jobs, and I want us to invest in the energy sources of the future so that we can stay dominant. I will stand up to my own party if they mess with our oil and gas industry, and I will stand up to the other party if they mess with renewables. We can grow this industry and stay an energy leader in the 21st century just like we were in the 20th.

Texas GOP voter: The Republican Party has been hijacked. They're not the Republican Party that I was a member of for all of my life. Reporter: Is this a vote for Talarico or against Ken Paxton? Texas GOP voter: It's a vote for Talarico in this case. He presents himself in a very positive manner. He is clearly a legitimate Christian. He doesn't just talk the talk, he walks the walk, and you can tell the difference from a mile away.

.James Talarico: Before I was a politician, I was a 6th grade language arts teacher in San Antonio. We rank 43rd in the nation in per-student funding, and we are nickel-and-diming the most important professionals in our communities. We need to fully fund the Department of Education, guarantee universal high-quality early childhood education, and pass a long-overdue pay raise for our educators. Sending a teacher to the United States Senate from Texas will go a long way toward achieving that goal.

.James Talarico on Texas officially banning THC: “This bill is insane. Texans aren’t going to stop smoking weed and eating edibles because politicians in Austin say so. Texans will still use THC — but instead of getting it safely from a local small business, they’ll go back to getting it from the black market. From the drug cartels. This ban is a gift to the cartels. We are now telling full-grown adults how to live their lives. This is the nanny state at its worst; this is big government at its worst. Instead of fully funding our schools, guaranteeing healthcare, or making childcare more affordable — this Legislature is focused on banning a product that gives people a little peace. We’re making people’s lives harder, not easier. I want to leave you with a quote: ‘It is time to end needless arrests and incarcerations of adults for small amounts of marijuana for personal use.’ That wasn’t a Democrat. That was President Donald Trump. To my Republican colleagues, I’m asking you to oppose the cartels, stand with President Trump, and vote no on this insane bill.”

.Abby D. Phillip: Is Ken Paxton invited to [tonight’s] town hall? Well, good question. The answer is yes. Both candidates were invited to participate in the CNN Jubilee town hall. Talarico accepted. Paxton never replied to us. CNN has also invited both candidates to actually have a debate. Paxton has also not replied to that, and he also hasn't debated in general. Jemele Hill: If you're not willing to submit your ideas in the public square, then why should people trust you? Ana Navarro-Cárdenas: I think it's a disservice to voters, frankly. It's disrespectful to voters to not have televised debates, and to try to win elections just through negative ads.

Voter: So many young people can’t afford to buy a home James Talarico: I’m hearing this from young people all over the state. In the state legislature, I passed a bipartisan bill to repeal outdated regulations and allow for a new kind of housing to be built here in Texas. But when it comes to purchasing property, the folks who are buying up most of the properties here in Texas are Wall Street. We need substantial assistance for first-time homebuyers. We need to ban Wall Street from gobbling up our housing stock here in Texas so that we can allow actual Texans to afford a home.
