He who comes into equity must come with clean hands. In his famous 1940 speech The Federal Prosecutor, Robert H. Jackson (U.S. Supreme Court Justice and Nuremberg Chief Prosecutor) famously outlined the enormous, unchecked power prosecutors hold. He warned of the danger when a prosecutor lets personal bias compromise their impartiality: "The prosecutor has more control over life, liberty, and reputation than any other person in [a democracy]. His discretion is tremendous. While the prosecutor at his best is one of the most beneficent forces in our administration of justice, the prosecutor at his worst can be the easiest instrument of tyranny to abuse the tremendous power of the State."
