According to Will Smith in a recent interview, his long-time friendship with Martin Lawrence has completely fallen apart over the Bad Boys franchise. Will claimed that during the making of Bad Boys: Ride or Die, he found out Martin had been secretly shopping a solo Bad Boys spin-off to Netflix and Amazon behind his back — a project that would have made Marcus Burnett the main character and written Mike Lowrey out almost completely. Will said the betrayal hit him hard. He accused Martin of “stabbing him in the back after everything we’ve built together” and revealed that the secret talks were happening while they were still out promoting the movie like nothing was wrong. Now Will has allegedly filed a lawsuit against Martin, claiming breach of an informal partnership agreement. He’s trying to block any solo Bad Boys project and is demanding a share of any profits Martin might make from the idea, arguing that the characters and universe were co-created. Martin’s camp has hit back hard, calling the lawsuit “pure ego” and claiming Will has been trying to sideline him for years. But according to Will, the trust is gone and he’s ready to take it all the way to court.
