"Nobody summons Megatron" 40th Anniversary approaching! The Transformers: The Movie origin of Galvatron. Another iconic scene. Animation, pacing, and voice acting all superb. A transformation scene that has inspired toys and collectibles, as Megatron becomes Galvatron. Orson Welles as the voice of the chaos bringer Unicron. Megatron makes a deal with Unicron (the devil) for a new body and new troops to command. I bet we all knew the words in this scene. See if you can use a quote today. If your partner asks you to take out the trash/bins, reply "Your bargaining posture is highly dubious..."

"What's that darn fool doing?" My introduction to Kup, voiced by the excellent Lionel Stander (January 11, 1908 to November 30, 1994). I used to identify with Hot Rod, but now I identify with Kup in this movie. Hot Rod by opening fire on the shuttle and helping to bring it down gave the Autobots a warning and prevented a probable massacre. Although sadly making it unlikely any of the shuttle crew might have survived. Hot Rod protects Daniel and is then attacked by Blitzwing, but thanks to the intervention of Kup, both Blitzwing and Shrapnel are taken out and the dynamic duo make their escape. The Transformers: The Movie is full of scenes with classic dialogue, supported with excellent hand drawn animation and an 80s pop rock soundtrack. 40th anniversary this year! Hasbro, we need this in the cinemas, if only for a few weekends.

Should Galvatron have terminated Starscream? The coronation of Starscream. I like how there was no big epic battle. Galvatron is just taking out the trash. Was Starscream clothes/outfit the first time we saw a Transformer wear items, apart from that one G1 episode where the Autobots were disguising themselves as humans? At least we know the colour of Rumble now. "Who disrupts my coronation?" -Starscream "Coronation, Starscream? This is bad comedy." -Galvatron

The Transformers: The Movie a scene that emphasised the tragedy of the death of Optimus Prime. A loss felt by a generation of kids brought up watching the original Transformers cartoon. This scene helped shape the mythos of Transformers. The idea that Prime was a rank rather than a name. The Autobot Matrix of Leadership's first appearance as a physical object rather than a simple programme inside Optimus Prime's head like the comics. Something the comics later adopted. Merchandise inspired by the tragic loss of Prime included "Convoy Sleep Mode" Takara Tomy 2010 and "Alternate Universe Optimus Prime" 2021 Hasbro. This was the start of Hasbro’s childhood trauma toy line... This scene hit kids particularly hard in North America, which had the advantage of seeing the full seasons of Transformers G1, unlike the UK, which was limited and sporadic at best. The UK had to depend on the Marvel Transformers comics for content. "Until that day, til all are one." -Optimus Prime

"How do you feel, mighty Megatron?" The Transformers: The Movie. The Decepticons retreat. Optimus Prime having defeated Megatron, has turned the tied, but at what cost? Starscream orders Astrotrain to transform and get the Decepticons out of here. Astrotrain requests the Decepticons jettison some weight, Starscream takes a simple vote, Decepticon democracy at it's finest and proceeds to push out injured comrades through the airlock, before personally throwing Megatron out himself. Then the Decepticons have a minor disagreement about who should be the new leader of the Decepticons. I do wish we got to see the full fight between the Decepticons. "Jettison some weight, or I'll never make it to Cybertron." -Astrotrain "Well... as Megatron has, how shall we say, departed... I nominate MYSELF as the new leader!" -Starscream "Soundwave superior. Constructicons inferior." -Soundwave
