Windows 95 was incredibly needy! Every time you wanted to try something new, it wanted you to put the disc back in 💿😏 There was, however, a very simple DOS era trick that could finally teach Windows how to find its own damn CAB files. Who else remembers dealing with this?

Some people help write history. Margaret Hamilton helped write the software that got us there 🌖 Today we learned that Margaret Hamilton, one of the true pioneers of computing and software engineering, has passed away at the age of 90. Last year I made this video about the Apollo Guidance Computer, and especially about Margaret and the incredible team she led at MIT. It feels appropriate to share it again tonight in her honor. During Apollo 11’s descent to the Moon, the Guidance Computer suddenly began throwing the now-famous 1201 and 1202 alarms. It was overloaded at one of the worst possible moments. But it didn’t simply crash. The software Hamilton and her team had designed recognized what was happening, discarded lower-priority work, and kept the tasks necessary to land the Lunar Module running. That wasn’t luck. That was engineering. Margaret helped pioneer ideas like fault-tolerant software, asynchronous processing and priority scheduling at a time when “software engineering” itself was barely recognized as a discipline. She fought to change that too. We remember the astronauts because they walked on the Moon. We should also remember the engineers who made sure the computers could get them there. Margaret Hamilton was one of the greatest. I am always deeply honored when someone tells me I resemble her, which is a regular occurrence ☺️ Rest in peace, Margaret. And thank you for helping humanity make one giant leap 🌙💻 Music Piano Pill (YouTube).

Some girls dress for the occasion, I dress for the truck 😏 Today we’re firing up Monster Truck Madness, Microsoft’s gloriously ridiculous Windows 95 masterpiece. Big tires, questionable physics, lots of bouncing, and of course I had to drive Snake Bite, for obvious reasons 🐍 The best part? Nearly 30 years later, this thing still runs surprisingly well on modern hardware and Windows. Find yourself a copy and get dirty 😈

I just watched episode 1 of the Victoria's Secret "Angels Among Us" angel search that I applied for, and still bummed I didn't even make it to a simple casting call 🥲 It's ok though, I think I would have been the oldest one there, by far. Not sure they wanted a professional working mom who is nearly 40 walking the runway in lingerie 🤣 Better for one of these young girls who wants a IMG Models contract though, since I don't need that. I just wanted to represent us nerds 🤓 P.S. It's better here with you all anyway ❤️

In the late '90s, one budget PC brand looked at Apple's sleek, curvy iMac G3 and thought, 'Damn, I want a piece of that! So they made their own... a shameless, translucent, all-in-one knockoff. It was bold. It was scandalous. And oh, it was so illegal 🚫 Apple sued them into oblivion! In all honesty though, I kinda respect the hustle 😅 Get ready for the wild story of the eMachines One: the bad boy of budget PCs that tried to seduce the world... and got absolutely wrecked. The first time I ever played Quake III Arena was on a Mac 😳 Q3Test hit Macs first in 1999, with id using the smaller Mac audience as an early test group before the Windows release. So every CompUSA trip with my Dad meant straight to the Apple section for Quake III on an iMac G3... with that ridiculous hockey puck mouse 😵 Did you do the same? Do you remember playing Q3Test before Quake III officially launched?

She’s wide, beige, powerful, and could command a room full of terminals. Meet my Datapoint 6600! I’m in love, obviously 🥰 A beast of a machine from a nearly forgotten company with a serious claim to the first personal computer, and a direct connection to Intel’s earliest microprocessors. Also, why is that screen so wide? Full story coming soon!

Back in the 90s, if you wanted to attempt to overclock your CPU, you didn’t just open the BIOS menu, you pulled off the side panel and went straight to the motherboard. Motherboards used tiny plastic jumpers to set things like bus speed and multipliers. One wrong jumper position… and the system wouldn’t even boot. Overclocking used to be an adventure, to say the least.

I see you looking past me at my Tron poster 👀 Tron turns 44 today! Released on July 9, 1982, it was a movie so good-looking that it flopped and still won. Come for the light cycles, stay for the incredible soundtracks that somehow get better and better. End of line 🖤

She’s got curves, brains, and a 68040 that still makes me weak in the knees 😏 The Amiga 4000: Commodore’s last great machine and maybe one of the sexiest computers ever made. Full vid coming soon! #Amiga #Commodore #Retro #vintagecomputing #retrocomputing #nostalgia #pcmr
