US envoy to the Middle East Tom Barrack sparked outrage in Lebanon after insulting and dehumanising a journalist during a conference, telling the audience to “act civilised and not be animalistic.” His remarks were widely seen—especially by Lebanese and Arabs—as an insult to the entire region. On social media, many condemned what they described as arrogant American disdain, calling it an example of white, colonial racism. Many protested, forcing Barrack to cancel a planned tour of southern Lebanon. The Lebanese Press Syndicate also condemned the “inappropriate treatment” of journalists and demanded an apology from Barrack and the US State Department.
