BLACK ORPHEUS (1959), directed by Marcel Camus and starring Breno Mello, Marpessa Dawn, Lourdes de Oliveira and Léa Garcia, reimagines the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice during Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro. Based on the play “Orfeu da Conceição” by Vinicius de Moraes, the film won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.

But if you're hard to get, I go for you." 🎶 Dorothy Dandridge performing "Dat's Love" (vocals by Marilyn Horne) in Otto Preminger's CARMEN JONES (1954), based on Oscar Hammerstein II's stage musical of the same name. Dandridge earned a Lead Actress nomination at the 27th Oscars for her performance, becoming the first Black woman nominated in the category. The film, which also stars Harry Belafonte, Pearl Bailey, Olga James, Diahann Carroll and Joe Adams, received a nomination for Scoring of a Musical Picture (Herschel Burke Gilbert) as well.
