The DFB-Pokal clash between SV Waldhof Mannheim and 1. FC Kaiserslautern in August descended into chaos, prompting the city of Mannheim to launch an investigation into the violent scenes. On Tuesday, some extraordinary details emerged. Matches between Mannheim and Kaiserslautern are notoriously heated, with the two cities located relatively close to each other by German standards. Security was therefore prepared for strict searches โ but so were the visiting supporters, who reportedly found an unusual way to smuggle in fireworks and explosive devices. Condoms were discovered in the toilets at the Carl-Benz-Stadion, and the explanation was far from what you might expect. โWe shouldnโt be surprised that so many condoms were found in the stadium toilets,โ said Mannheimโs head of public order and security. โNot because of any bizarre sexual practices, but because the fans smuggled pyrotechnics into places that we cannot access, despite all the means at our disposal.โ According to the findings, supporters allegedly concealed the pyrotechnics internally to get past the strict security checks. However, the investigation also concluded that security measures had failed. Officials believe the sheer amount of pyrotechnics set off inside the stadium could not have been smuggled in solely through body cavities, meaning staff and suppliers will face stricter checks on matchdays. The match on 21 August was marred by serious disorder. A total of 85 people, including 35 police officers, required medical treatment, while eight were taken to hospital. Violence broke out both in the stands and on the pitch. Kaiserslautern supporters fired pyrotechnics towards the main stand, while players from both sides became involved in physical altercations on the field.
