This is some moment. The statue of Sheikh Mujib, the father of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and the country's independence leader, is being destroyed. Unfortunately, his reputation (most support him, others not) has been significantly tarnished by association with her daughter.

The quota protest organisers called for mass protests today against the law enforcement killings and the ensuing government crackdown involving arbitrary arrests of thousands, as well resignation of key ministers and apology from the prime minister. And people have responded in their thousands throughout the country and in many different places in the capital city Dhaka. Here are just two images from Dhaka. Video from Kilgaon with chants of: “we have given blood. We will give more blood”. The picture is from Uttara. One other key chant heard at other protests In Dhaka I am told is: “Step down dictator, step down Hasina, one demand one demand, when you are going away Hasina?” (Hasina being the country’s prime minister)

The irony. The irony. … Here is the Uk Awami League, holding right now in London a peaceful rally outside the House of Commons in support of the #Bangladesh government, …. when back in Bangladesh the Awami league government law enforcement authorities have (a) literally just a few hours ago arrested students in a number of locations who tried to protest, (b) have in recent days arrested thousands of opposition and student activists and (c) a week ago quashed large student protests by shooting at, and killing, at least 200 protesters and on lookers. These people are sloganising about the wonder of Sheikh Hasina, the leader of the Awami League and the prime minister of Bangladesh responsible for all this. To say this is shameless is the least of it

The student spray paints, "Murderer Hasina" on the wall. a large crowd cheers. This is yesterday at. the Chittagong court premises. There may well have been popular anger in some quarters towards Sheikh Hasina, the prime minister, but this kind of popular expression seems new. Psychological/political boundaries seem to be being broken. The slogan is: "Shame on you, Hasina. Shame on you."
