Kevin Costner’s wife asked for $248,000 a month in child support. In court, she said she didn’t know how she’d afford groceries. They had a prenup. It gave her 30 days to leave his house after she filed for divorce. A judge had to order her out. They married in 2004 and had three children. In May 2023, after 18 years, she filed. The house was his, bought in 1988, before the marriage. The prenup paid her $100,000 on the wedding day, $100,000 on the first anniversary, and $1 million after she filed. He offered about $51,000 a month. A judge set $129,755 for now. She asked for more. She moved into a $40,000-a-month rental and said it wasn’t enough for the kids. That summer, she was photographed on vacation in Hawaii with a family friend, Josh Connor. In September 2023, the judge decided: $63,209 a month. In the video below, Kevin arrives at court: “We’re talking about somebody I love on the other side.” Then listen for what she says is in the kids’ DNA. She later married Josh Connor. The case for Christine: 18 years, three kids, and a husband who made over $1 million a month on Yellowstone. The case for Kevin: she signed the prenup, and their oldest son drives a 15-year-old truck. Was $63,209 a month for three kids fair, or did she ask for too much?

Heather Mills asked Paul McCartney for $250 million after four years of marriage. The judge gave her $48 million and called her case “make-believe.” On the last day in court, she poured a jug of water over the head of his lawyer. That lawyer was Fiona Shackleton, the same woman who handled Prince Charles’s divorce from Diana. She was 34 when they married in 2002. He was 59. Four years later, they split. She fired her own lawyers and represented herself. She asked for $250 million. He offered $31 million. The judge called her “her own worst enemy” and her demands “unreasonable, indeed exorbitant.” On Paul, he said his evidence was “consistent, accurate and honest.” Years later, in the video below, she explained who she thought she had married: “A normal guy that happened to write a few cool songs in the 60s and a few in the 70s.” The case for Heather. She lost a leg at 25 and built a name for herself before she ever met him. And against the most feared divorce lawyer in Britain, with no lawyer of her own, she still walked out with $48 million. Do the math. Four years of marriage. $48 million. About $12 million for every year. Here’s the lesson. Asking for five times too much can still make you rich. It just costs you the judge. If you were her, would you have taken his $31 million offer, or gambled in court like she did?

Crystal Hefner was 26 when she married Hugh Hefner. He was 86. When he died, his will left her nothing. She walked away with a reported $5 million and a house anyway. The first time, she ran. Five days before the 2011 wedding, she called it off. Playboy had already printed her on the cover: “Introducing Mrs. Crystal Hefner.” In the video below, they’re together before the wedding. Watch them, then decide. She came back. They married on New Year’s Eve, 2012. There was a prenup. She later said she loved him but was never “in love” with him. About the weekly allowance he gave the women in the mansion, she said: “Everything has a price.” He died in 2017. His estate, reported at about $43 million, went to his four children, a university and charities. Crystal was not in the will. The prenup gave her the rest. The case for Crystal. In her memoir she says she felt “imprisoned” in the mansion and “had to play mind games to survive.” She calls him “on the extreme side of narcissism.” Do the math. Married in December 2012. Widowed in September 2017. About $1 million in cash for every year of marriage. Here’s the lesson. A prenup isn’t romantic. It’s the only part of a marriage that’s guaranteed to be read. Would you marry someone 60 years older for $5 million and a house?
