My general rule: the "cooler" a job is, the less it pays and the worse the working conditions are. Eg, a record label or small brand might pay you $1500 for the same work that Starbucks would pay $20k for (I've seen it firsthand many times). It's just supply and demand... tons of people want to work in music, fashion, entertainment, sports, etc., so they pay badly because, well, they can. A lot of the people are also bad at their job, unprofessional, or straight up psychotic and abusive. If you REALLY want to work in a "cool" industry, go for it - but only do it for a couple years. Don't stay there, because the ceiling is low. Take that experience and go to a mainstream company where they'll pay you way more to do the same work with people who aren't insane.

I did about 200 designs for Hollister (maybe more) back in 2009-2013. It was a HARD place to work: crazy pace, and the CEO reviewed everything down to the tiniest detail. But the designers were INSANELY good. I was easily in the bottom 20%... very humbling experience! Also, the product back then was legit the highest quality ever made at any price point, so I learned a ton from that. Definitely not easy or chill, but if you ever get the chance to work on a truly world-class team that will push you to your limit like that, you should do it at least for a year or two

Finished this desktop app that does CRT shaders and VHS/composite video distortion 🙌 I was tired of doing those in separate apps, so I figured I'd just put them together. AFAIK, it's the only one that does both at this level of quality and control. It supports images and videos, with VERY granular control over every parameter from subtle to completely obliterated. To be clear, I'm a dummy. This is just hacking together two existing open source projects that are the best in the world at what they do: NTSC-RS for the TV effect, and the CRT shaders from Retroarch. If you watched MTV, VH1 or Fuse in the 2000's you saw Justin Harder's work many, many times. This is his 2004 reel, and probably my single favorite design artifact of all time. He's pretty lowkey these days, but his work blew EVERYONE away back then and he was one of the most copied designers of the decade (myself included). IMO a lot of this stuff would still look fresh as hell if it came out today, and he definitely deserves his flowers for being such a huge part of that and era/aesthetic that so many people loved. AFAIK he's not on here, so I can't tag him.

COMING SOON TO PS1: Tony Squawk's Pro Skater 🛹 Featuring Chad Molluska (definitely not the octopus version of Chad Muska), Bam Marsupial and more! Backgrounds, graphics and characters are Nano Banana, videos are Seedance 2 and workflow is Figma Weave There's a few rough spots, eg the voices are slightly inconsistent, lip sync is a little wrong in one shot, etc but overall I'm pretty happy with it as a proof of concept! Might build this out into a full cut scene/level some time.

Shipped a bunch of updates for my VHS/CRT app this weekend- it looks SO GOOD when you zoom in really close and see what a difference it makes. One of my favorite details is the tapered edges on every row when there's a really high-contrast edge. Most CRT shaders don't do this. This doesn't have the aperture mask enabled, but that's an option too, as well as full control over all the parameters of the TV/VHS pipeline (composite noise, edge crawl, chroma loss, etc etc). To be transparent, this glues together two existing OSS projects (NTSC-RS and Libretro) so full credit to them for doing the hard parts!
