Can anyone (genuinely) explain what is going on here at the Idaho/Nevada/Utah tripoint? It’s baffling.

This guy is lucky to still be alive. In this crazy video from Mexico, a mountaineer records buzzing from a corona discharge (a form of St. Elmo’s Fire), and it means a lightning strike is imminent. Extreme voltage builds up between cumulonimbus clouds and the peak. The buzzing is the sound of electricity actively leaking into the atmosphere (often accompanied by tingling skin or hair standing on end), and is the final warning sign that lightning is about to strike that exact spot. The buzzing at the end of the video is quite extraordinary. Original video link:

Everest a couple of days ago. Why would anyone want to be a part of this? The worst kind of adventure capitalism.

Did George Mallory make it to the summit of Everest in 1924, 29 years before Edmund Hillary? Mallory never returned to tell, and his body remained missing for 75 years. In 1999 a team found Mallory, with what remains one of the most neck-hair raising videos on the internet.

This video from the Cairngorms in Scotland yesterday amply demonstrates why summer snow patches are so important. In times of drought (even in Scotland), melting snow feeds into the rivers, providing cold and well-oxygenated air for migrating fish. It regulates water temperature in summer and creates vernal pools, essential for amphibian breeding. 1/2

Hello to the 6,300 new followers. Though you’ve doubtlessly come for the World Cup geography posts, I’m afraid you’ll have to put up with a bit of this. Me today celebrating Scotland’s win by going to see some snow in the Cairngorms. Yes, this is Scotland in summer.
