Despite its huge size, the place in the contiguous United States which is farthest from a maintained public road is Thorofare Ranger Station in Wyoming: a mere 21 miles from the nearest public road. This probably says more about excellent American infrastructure than anything.

Mark Cavendish’s chain came off today at the #TdF2024 as he crossed the line because he dropped from ~1500W to 0W. Quite common. 1.5kW is 2 horse power! Enough to power a toaster, or a kettle to boil water. Astonishing amount of power.

Last night a meteoroid was seen (and heard) all across the west of Scotland. A blaze of light and a very loud explosion woke quite a few folk up. (Video was sent to me so I don’t have the credit. Apparently from Isle of Lewis.)

This is my worst nightmare. A climber lost his footing in a steep, snow-filled gully in the Tatras Mountains, Poland. Luckily for him he escaped serious injury. The helplessness to do anything is etched on the face of the adjacent climber.

I despair. The Ben Nevis summit shelter is, as the name suggests, a refuge for people who may require it in an emergency. Instead it’s been used as a dumping ground for selfish people who can’t be bothered to take their sh!t home.

This unassuming little spring bubbles up from the ground at 4,000 feet (1,220 metres) on the Braeriach plateau, and is the source of the River Dee. It has never been known to run dry, even in the hottest and driest years. Where the water comes from is not certain.

Think you’re safe walking through the Lairig Ghru in spring? The first two photos from a couple of days ago show a big snow cornice collapse, taking with it many tonnes of muck and rock, almost reaching the Pools of Dee. This guy is lucky to still be alive. In this crazy video from Mexico, a mountaineer records buzzing from a corona discharge (a form of St. Elmo’s Fire), and it means a lightning strike is imminent. Extreme voltage builds up between cumulonimbus clouds and the peak. The buzzing is the sound of electricity actively leaking into the atmosphere (often accompanied by tingling skin or hair standing on end), and is the final warning sign that lightning is about to strike that exact spot. The buzzing at the end of the video is quite extraordinary. Original video link:
