Mark Cavendish’s chain came off today at the #TdF2024 as he crossed the line because he dropped from ~1500W to 0W. Quite common. 1.5kW is 2 horse power! Enough to power a toaster, or a kettle to boil water. Astonishing amount of power.

This is my worst nightmare. A climber lost his footing in a steep, snow-filled gully in the Tatras Mountains, Poland. Luckily for him he escaped serious injury. The helplessness to do anything is etched on the face of the adjacent climber.

Last night a meteoroid was seen (and heard) all across the west of Scotland. A blaze of light and a very loud explosion woke quite a few folk up. (Video was sent to me so I don’t have the credit. Apparently from Isle of Lewis.)

I despair. The Ben Nevis summit shelter is, as the name suggests, a refuge for people who may require it in an emergency. Instead it’s been used as a dumping ground for selfish people who can’t be bothered to take their sh!t home.

The word ‘steaming’ for being drunk stems from when people in Scotland used to circumvent Sunday licensing laws by taking to the water. Public houses were closed, but steamships weren’t. To be ‘steaming drunk’ made its way into public parlance.

Scotland’s ‘glacier’ has finally slipped. At some point over the last 24 hours thousands of tonnes of snow crashed from the Great Slab towards the loch below. 1.

One consequence of the increased temperatures is that, despite the lack of rain, many of the rivers in the Cairngorms are in spate. Snow-melt fuels this process, introducing cool, oxygenated water into the rivers Spey and Dee. Good for salmon and other fish. Video Paul Phillips.

This unassuming little spring bubbles up from the ground at 4,000 feet (1,220 metres) on the Braeriach plateau, and is the source of the River Dee. It has never been known to run dry, even in the hottest and driest years. Where the water comes from is not certain.

This video is way upstream of Brechin, and shows a minor tributary of the River South Esk. And this is *before* the red warning kicks in. Expect to wake up to unheard-of scenes tomorrow. Swept-away bridges and severe flooding in Angus for sure.

Winter simply refuses to give up its grip on the high Cairngorms. Paul Phillips’ visit yesterday to Ciste Mhearad (aka ‘the snow house’ of the 18th century) showed drifts that were about 6-8 metres high. These will take some shifting.

Walruses are rare visitors to British waters. This one at Lossiemouth in north east Scotland appears to be in no rush to go anywhere, though. Video:

Today I went to Glas Maol, a hill at the Glenshee ski centre. I knew from seeing photos that the avalanche that happened there recently had exposed a large crown-wall. However, I wasn’t expecting Antarctica-like scenes. 1/

The fence in this video is actually more than just a boundary between two landowners. It’s the England/Scotland border in the Cheviots. Yesterday as I walked upwards I made sure I stayed on the best side, while the English gent walking stayed on the wrong side… &lt;/sarcasm&gt;

Did George Mallory make it to the summit of Everest in 1924, 29 years before Edmund Hillary? Mallory never returned to tell, and his body remained missing for 75 years. In 1999 a team found Mallory, with what remains one of the most neck-hair raising videos on the internet.

This is exactly what you don’t want to see as you’re about to hit the slopes. Heavy snow recently, but then a huge rise in temperatures (21.7°C today in Chamonix) resulted in multiple big slides.

Hello to the 6,300 new followers. Though you’ve doubtlessly come for the World Cup geography posts, I’m afraid you’ll have to put up with a bit of this. Me today celebrating Scotland’s win by going to see some snow in the Cairngorms. Yes, this is Scotland in summer.

Me and a friend went exploring in a snow tunnel last night. Summer in Scotland throws up unexpected views and experiences.

The A90 south of Aberdeen looks like something from a video you see of Arctic Norway or Finland. One of the biggest snow events of the last 20 years in north-east Scotland for sure.

On the 12th June 2023, a BBC Weatherwatcher sent in a photo of Ben Nevis being struck by lightning. The next day a local guide went to the top and found the exact point where it had hit. If there’d been a group of walkers there it would have resulted in multiple fatalities.

Scotland is famous for its hills and scenery, but the spectacle of the Waverley steaming up the Clyde surely has to rank as one of our country’s greatest sights.
