Remembering the great Alice Coltrane who was born on this day in 1937. An accomplished pianist and one of the few harpists in the history of jazz, Coltrane was also one of the foremost exponents of spiritual jazz. Her eclectic music proved widely influential both within and outside the world of jazz. She was married to jazz saxophonist and composer John Coltrane, with whom she performed in 1966–1967. Alice Coltrane recorded many albums as a bandleader, beginning in the late 1960s and early 1970s for Impulse! and other major record labels. Here, she is playing the harp in 1970. This clip is from the Black Journal documentary. The segment focuses on the life of Alice Coltrane and her children in the wake of the death of her husband John Coltrane.
