In a government-arranged confession, he broke down in tears and begged for forgiveness. The judge sentenced him to 15 years of hard labor. This original news report captures the moment the sentence was announced, when there was still hope that diplomatic negotiations could bring him home. After 17 months in North Korean custody, Otto was finally returned to the United States on June 13, 2017. He had suffered catastrophic brain damage and was unresponsive. Six days later, he died. 🚨 NEW: Christa Pike’s attorney Stephen Ferrell spoke on CNN this morning and gave a grim update after Tennessee’s failed execution attempt. Ferrell said Pike is still hospitalized, unconscious, intubated and on a ventilator, and that doctors are still trying to clear the pentobarbital from her body. He said her prognosis remains unknown and they may not know the full extent of her condition for several days. He also said that if Pike survives but does not fully recover, questions about her competency could become an issue. According to Ferrell, the Tennessee Attorney General’s office has not told the defense whether the state intends to try to execute her again. He also said he has not been allowed to see Pike, and that medical decisions are currently being handled by the person she designated with medical power of attorney. A lot is still unknown right now — including whether she will regain consciousness, what permanent damage she may have suffered, and what Tennessee plans to do next.
