When the Panama Canal was built, engineers did not simply excavate a channel across the isthmus. They created an inland waterway. By damming the Chagres River in 1913, engineers formed Gatun Lake, which became the largest artificial lake in the world at the time. Ships entering the canal are lifted about 26 meters above sea level to navigate across this lake before descending again toward the opposite ocean. Today, Gatun Lake remains essential to canal operations, providing the freshwater that fills the locks and enabling vessels to cross the continental divide.
