Genital surgery is happening on minors. And it’s a serious problem we must end. Intersex babies are too often forced to undergo surgery by their parents and doctor in order to fit a false biological binary because of shame and stigma. 1-2 percent of the population is intersex, as common as red heads. Intersex is an umbrella term for differences in sex traits or reproductive anatomy. People are born with these differences or develop them at a young age. Trans people are not advocating for minors to undergo genital surgery, but forced genital surgeries are happening every day to intersex babies. Trans kids exist and they deserve developmentally appropriate expressions of affirming care as outlined by WPATH’s standards for care. Happy Trans Awareness Week! I published an op-ed in TIME 🏳️⚧️ A few months ago I went through a challenging targeted media attack. I was harassed, doxxed, and received death threats daily. I’m no stranger to receiving hateful comments online, but this experience was unprecedented. Everything I posted in June was met with over-sexualized comments, transphobic rhetoric, and hateful vitriol. I found it paradoxical how the same people could slut-shame me for being a woman, while simultaneously calling me a “man”. This later led me to have conversations and to journal about my feelings of being over-sexualized and harmed due to trans misogyny. Thus came my Op-Ed, “The Desire to Cruelty Pipeline: The Oversexualization and Violence Toward Trans Women.” Go read it and then comment here what you thought! This does matter. Because words from leaders, especially queer leaders, carry weight. After meeting Pete Buttigieg , I saw someone who’s made history and genuinely wants to lead with compassion. In his recent NPR interview, he made important points, like rejecting blanket bans on trans athletes and calling out the political games being played in Washington. That deserves recognition. But in the same breath, he referred to trans girls as “boys” and framed our inclusion as a “serious fairness issue.” That language is harmful and it feeds the exact fear he said he wanted to rise above. I made this video not to attack, but to clarify. To offer facts, lived experience, and a call for better from someone I still believe can do better. As the political landscape shifts and ambitions rise, I hope we remember who’s often caught in the crossfire and why it matters that we lead with integrity, not appeasement. This isn’t about fairness. It’s about fear, misinformation, and scapegoating. Trans people deserve dignity. We deserve truth. Because of discrimination and transphobia in our society, trans people are at higher risk for STIs. Condoms and dental dams are the best way to protect against STIs. Visit your local @PlannedParenthood Health Center for free condoms, lube, free or affordable screenings, and so much more! This Valentine’s Day make sure to have fun and play safe! In this lesson I also debunk a common misconception about trans people. Because there is a lack of studies and information, gender-affirming hormone therapy cannot be relied upon as a form of contraception even though it does generally decrease fertility.
