Somali Salt Industry, During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, European colonial rule changed the existing Somali salt trade. In Italian Somaliland, salt production became more industrialized. The Hafun (Dante) salt works, developed in the 1930s, became a major commercial enterprise, producing large quantities of salt for export to markets including India and the Far East. British Somaliland relied mainly on traditional salt production around Zeila, with salt traded inland toward Ethiopia. Colonial policies, borders, and foreign trade monopolies later restricted some of these traditional markets. Credit: Majabestories (TikTok)
