Holy crap I didn’t think of this. This man says insurance companies in Western North Carolina don’t have to pay out life insurance if they don’t have the body of the person - and many bodies will most likely never be found, resulting in billions of dollars that will never be paid. Under common law, I read that legal presumption of death can cause it to be paid - after seven years. So not only are people dealing with the loss of their loved ones, their homes, FEMA denials, sleeping in tents, etc, but insurance isn’t paying life insurance claims to next of kin who have family members they’ve lost.
