The lead hunter steps forward and begins to chant—this is Ijala. His voice rises and falls like the forest winds, reciting praise names for the mighty animal before him. He calls upon Ogun, the god of hunting, thanking him for protection and success. He weaves in stories of legendary hunts from generations past, passing down wisdom that books could never capture. Ijala is more than just words. It's respect. It's gratitude. It's the hunter acknowledging that he and the animal are both part of nature's sacred cycle. Every chant is different, flowing from the hunter's heart and skill, honoring both the courage it took to hunt and the life that was given. You heard Yoruba language inside a Nupe song and thought you were imagining it. NO YOU'RE NOT! The Nupe and the Yoruba have been connected for over 500 years, through war, blood and culture. Ṣàngó one of the early Aalafin had a Nupe mother, her name was Torosi. The lgunnuko masquerade celebrated in Lagos and Ogun state came from Patigi in Niger State. Towns like Lafiagi and Pategi in Kwara State, have intertwined and inter-married with Yorùbá people. Two people so intertwined that even their music carries each other's language. Some connections are older than memory and music remembers what history books forget. #YorubaGreatness
