Thirty two years ago today, on August 13, 1994, Winston Farm in Saugerties, New York, became a mud caked battlefield as an estimated 350,000 people gathered for Woodstock ’94. The rain had turned the festival grounds into a giant swamp, but when Metallica took the stage Saturday night, the skies cleared and the band delivered an unforgettable performance. James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Jason Newsted looked out at a sea of mud covered fans and delivered a masterclass in heavy metal. On This Day in Metal August 20, 2005 Iron Maiden took the stage at the Hyundai Pavilion in San Bernardino, California, for their final Ozzfest appearance, and the night became one of the most infamous shows in the band’s history. Eggs, ice and bottle caps were thrown at the stage, the PA and power were repeatedly cut, and a roadie even ran across the stage waving an American flag while chanting Ozzy’s name. Bruce Dickinson refused to let it stop Iron Maiden, famously raising the Union Jack and declaring: “These colors do not run.” The incident was widely attributed to tensions between Dickinson and Sharon Osbourne, following his outspoken comments about reality TV, teleprompters and the Ozzfest production. Future Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich was in the crowd after traveling to England to spend time with Diamond Head. With Black Sabbath forced to withdraw, Ozzy Osbourne stepped in for a rare UK solo performance alongside Randy Rhoads, while Motörhead headlined at the height of their No Sleep ’til Hammersmith success. This rare footage, filmed by Philthy Animal Taylor’s father, captures Lemmy introducing Ozzy Osbourne before Ozzy takes the stage. An Ozzy Osbourne megafan has spent 50 years amassing the world's largest collection of Black Sabbath memorabilia - worth a quarter of a million pounds. Stephen Knowles, 59, has splashed out around £35,000 on thousands of items since falling in love with the heavy metal icons as a 10-year-old boy in 1975. Over five decades he has amassed an incredible hoard of memorabilia - including rare vinyls, t-shirts, ticket stubs, backstage passes, posters, old cassette tapes and tour programmes. The collection is crammed into three rooms as well as the attic of Stephen's home in Dudley, West Mids., and is estimated to be worth around £250,000.
