Lewis Hamilton asked what went through his mind some minutes after the 'nightmare start for the Scuderia'. "Just thought about the team. Just thinkin about the team. Obviously we were both in decent position.. if we just held those two positions we would've been in a much better position... lost so much ground then... to get so few points for the team I think is really sad." 'LEWIS HAMILTON WAS THE RACE TODAY.' "I absolutely loved watching him. It was vintage Hamilton, working his way through those lowly positions, but it all started here, didn't it? On this first lap, on the parade lap, when the car had no drive. And it looked for a moment like we were going to be seeing him retire from this Grand Prix before it even got going in the wet conditions." "Grinds to a halt, stops on the pit straight, and I'm looking at his dash here, and I'm thinking he's cycling through different menus, and desperately trying to get the engine going. And finally, it does. It gets going, and it was a big relief for everybody. And then, of course, as I can see, the crowd cheering as he gets going. But others were stopping on track as well." "But as you get going, he was instantly in trouble. And it was never accelerating as well as these flying Mercedes coming through. It wasn't so bad compared to Verstappen, but now, for me, this is the most impressive moment of driving that Hamilton displayed today. Because this, I know, is incredibly hard. You've got cars overtaking you, left, right, centre. You're so scared of spinning the car. Watch the little snaps of oversteer that he has, especially as he starts to build up speed. It is like trying to run on ice as you try and put your foot down. And it's so tempting to try and go with these guys overtaking you, but every step of the way, your heart is in your mouth. Judging every braking distance properly and sensibly is something that many drivers would fall foul of, and he's using all of his experience here, all of his skill, to just survive. And survive he did." "It doesn't stop. It's never ending. Lap after lap, he had to survive like this. So he did, and finally, they came up to temperature, the track dried enough, and he could get going properly." "And this is when Lewis is at his best, and he's fighting his way through the field, gets past the Audi into Turn 1, and Hülkenberg next on his hit list is Piastri in front of McLaren, who he displaces nicely on the run-up towards Turn 4. Piastri tries to defend. Lewis has the speed there from his exit from Turn 3, out of Turn 2 even, and then now we're on Lindblad towards the final corner. Sets himself up nicely in the slipstream. This is still a little bit damp on the inside, so you have to judge that quite wisely. And he does, another car passed, and onwards and upwards for him. Next up, we have Ocon into the same corner. And it's another fairly straightforward pass under the braking. And he was flying at this stage." "The soft tyre was suiting him, suiting the car. He overtakes Lawson. But finally, we're on Hadjar. Hadjar was suffering a bit of straight-line speed problems, and Lewis then crosses the line on the exit of Turn 1, keeps it a bit tighter to then open up Turn 2 on the exit. But we've got Albon there on the left-hand side, and Lewis has to back out of it. He can't attack Hadjar that time around. Second time around, though, he does get the job done into Turn 1, and that put him in a position where, when George had his failure, ended up with the podium. So it was a real up-and-down day for him." "Like I say, I loved watching it. He wouldn't have liked moments from today, but, wow, what a comeback. He should be proud of that one." - Anthony Davidson

🚨| Lewis Hamilton: "Execution in Q3 was pretty bad I would say. I ended up out in the middle of nowhere with nobody. And then when you're following another car, you arrive several kilometres faster into a corner. The braking distances adjust. It's all about getting into rhythm and I got really out of rhythm for Q3... It wasn't a terrible lap, but as I said, the references were all different. And we just ultimately didn't maximise." Prior to video clip, he added: "The car felt really good in practice and then in the qualifying. I didn't change anything so it felt good going into Q1 and Q1 was solid. And then we sat and waited. And then we waited too... you know, very long in the pit lane for the first part of Q2. And for some reason we just didn't have the pace. I'm not pretty sure why, whether it was tyre pressure, tyre temperature or whatever. So we need to look into that." F1 2026 | Monza

🚨| Lewis Hamilton's post-race interview. "I mean, I don't count on myself unlucky. I think about, I think about my mistake that I made yesterday, so I take full responsibility really for the fourth place I ended up getting because I damaged the car, then when they rebuilt the car they missed something on the suspension, so the balance was completely different, so that meant I was probably a good couple tenths, maybe three tenths slower than I should have been in qualifying, and then I ended up further back, got in the incident, five second penalty, so just like a domino effect from I think a decision mistake from myself, so, but the team have been doing a great job with strategy, pit stops, we are continuing to improve the car, I think our pace today without the damage, I think we could have been challenging for the win." Q: Yeah, we're waiting on the obviously the release, and you were looking for a front wing change, and I think he's fine, and you were immediately concerned for him, but you're worried you might pick up a penalty for that. "I mean, I don't know what, I mean I didn't do, I did what the green light went, and so I went, you're looking over here, you're not looking over there, so that's more kind of probably on the team ultimately, but I'm just, when it happened, then I noticed him and I stopped, and I might just, what went through my mind in that moment was back when Kimi hit and broke a leg, and my heart really sank for a second, but I'm really grateful he's okay." Q: Just to look on the positive, you go to Hungary, it's a great track for you, you know, you're second in the Championship again, it looks like that will be the case, there's an engine upgrade coming, are you very hopeful that the season can gather momentum for you? "I think so, I think we've, this weekend, a bit unfortunate, and then Silverstone again, I think it's really great to see the performance that we're bringing, and we're improving the car constantly, I think we've got more stuff coming in the pipeline to try and close that gap down, but to be here and have the pace generally that we did as a team is really encouraging, and I think yeah, I think there's still a long way to go, I can't afford weekends like this in the sense of my performance yesterday, so I'm going to step it up in terms of focus level for next week." Q: I understand the drivers are going to meet with the some of the stewards and some of the race directors Later "Not that I know of.." Q: You haven't saw a meeting or anything like that? "No, I try and avoid those things." Q: Haha "Yeah, I'm not gonna.. I don't think I'll be there. I don't know anything apart from drivers briefing." Q: But in terms of that, so you wouldn't be seeking any kind of I don't know just flexibility I guess under the driving standards that we have at the moment given that that seemed to be a racing incident? "Not particularly. It's not something that's not something I've come into this weekend thinking about, no. I'm sure they'll look at it and look at... I think that you know the FIA is trying to do the best job and be consistent. Obviously, it's not always the case that the consistency is achieved but yeah, I'm not really thinking about last weekend. It's done. I'm moving forwards." F1 2026 || Hungary

🚨| Lewis Hamilton: "Firstly I think the team, the guys in the garage, did a fantastic job with pit stops, strategy was generally very, very good. The car felt awesome and they've worked so hard to continue to provide a bit of an upgrade here. We're just chipping away at it all the time. We're losing still this first half of the season. We've been losing three to five tenths on the straight depending on which track we go to. That's a hard deficit to overcome just through corners, but we're close." "Today was definitely frustrating for me. I'm here to win and I really believe that this team can win. Whether or not we couldn't win this race, but to win championships you have to pick up every point. The last few races have been difficult with penalties and stuff. Today I lost several seconds behind Charles, which I think ultimately probably could have, would have made the difference at the end. But we'll take it offline." "My goal is to try and lead this team to the top, to the championship. We've got some work to do for sure." "We need to hit the ground running in Monza. Perfect execution. So, I hope our pace is a little bit better in Monza. I hope we're able to do well, to go to Monza as a Ferrari driver and hopefully be fighting towards the front would be something special." 🚨| Lewis Hamilton: "I feel optimistic. 5th is not the greatest, but it could be far far worse, so I'm grateful to be there and of course I wish I was up further ahead, however I think our race pace was pretty good in the race. Charles had a good race pace this morning and I feel optimistic, I think the car is in a better place, so I think hopefully with the right strategy, with the right execution, I think hopefully we can challenge the guys ahead."

'Too late for that now' Q: Listen, about Lap 1... It's difficult for a team when you've got two high-profile drivers, but there's been a bit of a discussion around that, given your championship position, should you have priority, and if there had been priority to a driver, would they have avoided the coming together of the two of you, which is ultimately very costly for you, I think... "We're too far past that already, so... Too late for that now. I lost a lot of points today to those guys up there just ahead, so... We'll do our best to keep pushing the rest of the season, but they're out now. Out out [ahead from us]." F1 2026 | Monza

🚨| Lewis Hamilton after qualifying. "[Lando Norris] did a great job. I didn't go quicker in the last lap. I was good through the session. I think we've done a good job this weekend. But I've got to go and see the stewards. [Tomorrow is] all dependent on the stewards, so we'll see what happens in the next half an hour. But I always think of the worst. So tomorrow might be damage limitations." F1 2026 | Hungary

Q: Is the race car better maybe than the qualifying car? Can you fight for the win? "Yeah really great car. I think we have a really great car. I think, you know, we're still Mercedes engines up ahead of us. And I think we've done a good job to be as close as we are to them. But they're ultimately gaining several tenths still on the straight. And that is what it is. And so we have to just do the best we can." "We're hoping for some tracks that don't maybe rely too much on power. Hopefully, maybe in the future. But I'm really grateful to the guys back at the factory. Because they did bring an upgrade here. They are really pushing. It's just, this is just the situation we're in." F1 2026 | Monza

🚨| Lewis Hamilton on that last pit stop decision and the first half of this F1 season. "I definitely don't think we should have taken the stop. The call came literally just before the pit lane entry, and I didn't have time to debate. And you've got to trust the decision that's been taken. In hindsight, my tyres were totally fine. I was probably going to lose out to Max, but I think I could have kept third at least. And then, yeah, just opened up the door obviously to the penalty there at the end." "I definitely am [optimistic for the second half of the season]. I'm massively grateful to the team, because they've really done a great job in this first half. I think the last three races, for me, have not been great. Lots of mistakes. A mistake at Silverstone that cost dearly and then obviously in the last race as well. So, yeah. And then this weekend. So, a lot of penalties in the last three races. So, I've got to work hard to not give them the opportunity to give me [more] penalties moving forwards." F1 2026 | Hungary

🚨| Lewis Hamilton on the up and down weekend so far. "I think when we started off FP1 the car felt great, I was consistent, but of course there was still, there's always areas that you feel like you can improve, so we made subtle changes to try and fix those improvements and it flipped the car on its head and it was horrible through sprint qualifying and then all through the race I just had no confidence in the balance, and we made all these changes into qualifying, so I was learning a new car again, a new balance again, which I'm much happier with, but now trying to progress with it, learning it in only like six laps was a challenge, but also the Mercedes are up ahead now that we have a bit of a deficit on power, so I think tomorrow I think our race pace should be better and I think as I said the car is better (for the race)."
