The purpose of the Senate was originally to represent the States - this is why each state has exactly two US Senators, unlike the apportioned US House. The 17th Amendment was an abomination and yet another power grab designed to weaken states. This is basic US Civics - yet another topic not covered in government schools. The fact this is omitted is not a failure of government schools - this was the intended result.
