Happy first Monday of August! It's been a busy and exciting start to the month, and we can't wait to unveil our latest exhibition. Our previous exhibition, "Reimagining the Promise," invited visitors to engage with 15 thought-provoking objects, each serving as a provocation to reflect on Africa's past, present and future. More than an exhibition, it was a call to confront the social ills that continue to hold us back and to imagine the collective action needed to overcome them. As we prepare to reveal what's next, we invite you to join us once again in shaping conversations that inspire change, challenge perspectives, and contribute to building the Africa we all aspire to. Stay tuned. Something meaningful is coming.

30 years ago today, at the adoption of our historic Constitution, then-Deputy President Thabo Mbeki declared that our Africanness would never be defined by race, colour, or gender. Instead, it is rooted in the truth that all Africans share a common origin and a common destiny. This document, a unique creation of African hands and minds, remains our guiding light toward a society free from fear, oppression, and inequality. South Africa belongs to all who live in it!

In this video, President Thabo Mbeki shares a powerful story about Soga’s Pan-African vision. He recounts how Soga responded to a 19th-century missionary who claimed Africans were a "perishing" people for refusing to convert. Soga rejected this narrow view, looking instead at the strength of Africans across the globe—from the Americas and the Caribbean to the continent itself. He argued that Africans, as a global diaspora, were not perishing but were part of a unified, resilient whole. #TiyoSoga #TheMbekiFoundation #ClassicsOnTurf #AfricanRenaissance #20June Mandisi Dyantyis Kutlwano Masote

President Thabo Mbeki on leadership: “The first requirement of leadership surely must be having an understanding of reality with which you are dealing with. A correct, truthful and objective understanding of reality, rather than an imagined reality…”

On the evening of 20 June, an orchestra and a choir take the stage of the Wits Great Hall for one purpose. To give Tiyo Soga his place back in the continental memory. Minister, translator, journalist, hymn writer. The first Black South African ordained into Christian ministry, and one of the earliest voices of the tradition we now call the African Renaissance. His music has carried for nearly two centuries, mostly in church pews. For one night it returns to the concert stage, curated by Mandisi Dyantyis, and conducted by Kutlwano Masote. A Commemorative Concert in Honour of Tiyo Soga, presented by the Thabo Mbeki Foundation and Classics on Turf. Made possible by Wiphold and supported by SAfm. Tickets are on sale now at Webtickets.
