In 2018, the now-former IDF spokesperson to the Arabic media, Avichay Adraee, published a video promoting the teachings of Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab, the father of ‘Wahhabism,’ a strict and puritanical interpretation of Islam that dominates Saudi Arabia and other Gulf regimes. He also referenced the writings of Ibn Taymiyyah and warned of the ‘dangers of Shia Islam and Iran.’ The message aimed to turn Sunni Muslims against Shia Muslims and to discourage Sunnis from taking part in the annual Al-Quds Day, which was instituted by Iran and takes place annually on the last Friday of the holy month of Ramadan in solidarity with Palestine.
