Exactly one year ago, the moment news broke that Hasina had cowardly fled Bangladesh 🇧🇩 to escape the fury of her own people, I rushed to join hundreds of London based British Bangladeshis gathered at Altab Ali Park near Brick Lane, celebrating the fall of this murderous fascist dictator and her Bangladesh Awami League. In the centre of the crowd stood a puppet effigy of Hasina, with a constant queue ten deep, waiting to strike it with their shoe, the ultimate gesture of contempt in our culture. I couldn’t resist. I joined the line, waited my turn, and delivered my blow. Most outsiders have no idea just how vicious and destructive Hasina truly was. For us, it was a moment of pure, unfiltered catharsis.
