Before filming on The Hobbit had even begun, Richard Armitage was already stepping into the role of Thorin Oakenshield. During the traditional Pōwhiri welcoming ceremony on the first day of filming in March 2011, Armitage spoke in Māori on behalf of the cast as the soundstage and production were welcomed and blessed. He then joined his fellow Dwarves in singing “Misty Mountains” long before audiences would hear their version in An Unexpected Journey. A pretty incredible way to begin their journey into Middle-earth.

One of the things I love most about the Battle of the Pelennor Fields from the books is what actually comes off those black ships. There is no Army of the Dead at Minas Tirith. Aragorn uses the Dead much earlier, at Pelargir, where the Corsairs of Umbar had been battling Gondor’s strength in the south. The dead don’t sweep through the Corsairs killing everyone either. Tolkien never actually describes the Dead killing anyone. Their presence is so terrifying that the Corsairs break, fleeing or throwing themselves into the water. Once Pelargir is taken, Aragorn declares their oath fulfilled and releases them. Aragorn takes the captured Corsair ships and sails north with the Grey Company at his side: the Rangers of the North who had ridden all the way from Eriador to join their Chieftain, along with Elladan and Elrohir, Legolas and Gimli. But most importantly, they bring the reinforcements that Gondor desperately needed. The Corsair threat had kept thousands of men from the south occupied defending their own lands instead of marching to Minas Tirith. By defeating that threat, Aragorn was finally able to gather those men and bring them north. So when the black ships appear on the Anduin and the defenders of Minas Tirith initially believe the Corsairs have arrived, the reveal is brilliant. The ships are carrying Aragorn, the Grey Company and men from Lebennin, Lamedon and the other southern lands of Gondor. These are Gondor’s own people coming to save their city. The living fought the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.

Benedict Cumberbatch came up with a brilliantly unsettling idea for The Hobbit. To make the Necromancer sound truly unnatural, he suggested performing the Black Speech backwards, then having the audio reversed again in post-production. The result was an eerie, otherworldly voice that felt genuinely ancient, demonic, and unholy.

So many small cool details everywhere in the trilogy. Here, the Orc army is chanting: “Katmûda!” — Death to Men! “Gorosh!” — Louder! “Katmûda!” — Death to Men! “Gorosh Chadar!” — Loud enough! Thousands of Orcs move as one, screaming for the extermination of mankind, then catapult the heads of fallen soldiers at the free peoples. Can't make an army more evil than that. Sir Christopher Lee boycotted the premiere of The Return of the King. Sir Chris was shocked to discover that Saruman’s character had been cut from the theatrical version of the film. After appearing as one of the trilogy’s main villains for two movies, audiences never learned what happened to him unless they later watched the Extended Edition. Peter Jackson defended his decision by contending it was time for the plot to move past Saruman and Isengard and focus solely on the threat of Sauron. When asked if he would attend the premiere, Lee famously replied: “No, what’s the point?” (The Guardian)

In the prologue of The Fellowship of the Ring, the original plan was to show a longer battle between Sauron and High King Elendil and Gil-galad, culminating in Gil-galad’s death by disintegration when Sauron grabs him (they even shot this!). It was eventually cut to keep the prologue more concise and because there were concerns it was too graphic. This would explain why Sauron reaches out for Isildur, a point that puzzles many people.
