.Tom Steyer: I'm totally in favor of trans athletes in high school. When you understand the vulnerability, the stress, and the danger of being a trans kid, and you understand that almost half of them try to commit suicide, then you think we're going to punish those kids? We're going to cut them off from team sports, from participating in the community, from fun? No, we're not.

Q: Xavier Becerra went on this show for about 2.5 minutes and he did not name a specific policy he would change. So let me ask you that same question — what is a specific policy that you would change? Tom Steyer: Can I go through a few? I’ve said we will break the monopoly power of the electric monopolies and reduce electric costs by 25%. We will push for single payer healthcare starting on day one. On day one I will call a special election to close a corporate tax loophole that’s worth over $20 billion to the state of California to step up our educational system and deliver healthcare. We’re going to build a million houses. The truth is the majority of Californians can’t make ends meet, and corporate special interests are driving up the costs for Californians.

Q: Would you advocate for an increase in oil production in California? Steyer: No Becerra: Yes

.Tom Steyer: Xavier Becerra is a corporate Democrat. He went into a meeting with the strongest lobby against single payer. The next day they endorsed him and maxed out to him — and then on the debate stage he would not give a clear answer on single payer. He’s taken the maximum amount of money from Chevron. Then he said he’s for oil drilling.

Voter: I asked Tom Steyer the exact same question I'd asked Xavier Becerra two weeks ago. I said to both of them, "You've come to the fastest-warming county in the lower 48, a place that's been hit by wildfires—do you have a climate plan?" For asking that question, I was thrown out of Xavier Becerra's town hall. I was escorted out, and my friends who were with me were roughed up. Here, Tom not only appreciated the question, he gave a substantive, well-thought-out answer. It was night and day. So I'm excited, and I'm going to be voting for Tom in June.

.Tom Steyer’s full closing statement: “This election is very clear. I’m a billionaire who’s fighting for working people every single day. I’m the billionaire who’s willing to tax the other billionaires and himself, who’s willing to take on the corporate special interests, who’s dedicating himself to driving down costs for working people across this state. Follow the money. They are spending tens of millions of dollars against me to try and stop me because they know that I’m the threat to their prosperity. And they’re not spending a penny against anyone else on this stage. They’re backing everyone else on this stage. Xavier is taking money from oil companies and from people who are desperate not to have single payer. I’m running to bring change and make people’s lives better. Healthcare are a right, great public schools, homes you can afford to buy. I’m asking you for your vote because I need you on June 2nd and every day after that.”

.Tom Steyer: On day one, I’ll call a special election to close a corporate tax loophole worth $20 billion to the state of California so we can build a million housing units. When I have talked to people from the counties or mayors, they have said that completely changes the picture. There’s no one else running for governor who’s talking about how they’re going to pay for the things they’re promising. I’m the person in this race who’s saying, I will make the billionaires like me and the big corporations pay their fair share.

.Mehdi Hasan: As governor, you have to work with the president. You’re OK doing that with this president? Tom Steyer: Are you kidding me? FEMA owes the state of California $55 billion which they refuse to pay. That’s not called working with the president. He’s doing exactly what you’d expect him to do. He’s refusing to treat California fairly. We should be standing up to him. He’s kicking millions of people off Medi-Cal. He is trying to hurt California. He has said that people who didn’t vote for him are his enemies, and that’s exactly how he’s treating us.

.Tom Steyer to Brian Tyler Cohen: The oil companies are spending millions of dollars against me. They have maxed out to Xavier Becerra. Becerra has said we need more oil drilling and ‘we need Chevron.’ He has no environmental policy to speak of. I've said we are going to push as hard as possible for single payer on day one. He has said behind closed doors, ‘We're not going to go for single payer.’ Follow the money and the endorsements.

.Tom Steyer says he will TAKE ON TRUMP as Governor: If someone just punched you in the face, are you going to talk it out? We're going to stand up for ourselves. Trump is attempting to end democracy in the United States and clearly trying to control us. California has a different vision of success — being able to compete internationally, create new businesses, and put people to work. We’re a community. We stand up for each other. And we bring everybody along. Our job is to succeed and to show the world that what we're doing is the democratic, liberty-loving way to build a great society.

Q: Do you support California having its own single payer health care system? Yes or no. Becerra: As I said, when I was Secretary of Health and Human Services… Q: Is that a yes or a no? Becerra: *doesn’t answer* Porter: You won't say whether you support California having its own state-run single payer system

.Tom Steyer to Brian Tyler Cohen: The biggest problem in California is people can't afford to live in California anymore. We have to take on corporate special interests driving up costs and feasting off Californians’ misery. I'm the only person in this race wanting to tax billionaires like me more, close corporate tax loopholes, and get the money to working people. We're the richest state and the richest country in the world and we have the highest poverty rate in the United States of America. That doesn't seem like success to me.

.Tom Steyer: On day one, I will call a special election to close a corporate real estate tax loophole worth over $20 billion to the state of California. So when we're talking about a new housing facility, it won’t be an unfunded liability — it will be a funded mandate. And we can then work with the cities and counties and they can stop dragging their feet.

.Tom Steyer: When I bring down electricity costs, that’s putting money in every family’s pocket and every business’s pocket. In the Central Valley, you have to use a lot of electricity to irrigate and move the water to where it has to go. California farmers pay three times as much for electricity to move water as Texas farmers. I want to bring that down.
