Q: Xavier Becerra went on this show for about 2.5 minutes and he did not name a specific policy he would change. So let me ask you that same question — what is a specific policy that you would change? Tom Steyer: Can I go through a few? I’ve said we will break the monopoly power of the electric monopolies and reduce electric costs by 25%. We will push for single payer healthcare starting on day one. On day one I will call a special election to close a corporate tax loophole that’s worth over $20 billion to the state of California to step up our educational system and deliver healthcare. We’re going to build a million houses. The truth is the majority of Californians can’t make ends meet, and corporate special interests are driving up the costs for Californians.

Voter: I asked Tom Steyer the exact same question I'd asked Xavier Becerra two weeks ago. I said to both of them, "You've come to the fastest-warming county in the lower 48, a place that's been hit by wildfires—do you have a climate plan?" For asking that question, I was thrown out of Xavier Becerra's town hall. I was escorted out, and my friends who were with me were roughed up. Here, Tom not only appreciated the question, he gave a substantive, well-thought-out answer. It was night and day. So I'm excited, and I'm going to be voting for Tom in June.

Jennifer Welch: I was pretty liberal. After a couple of Trump terms, I've gotten more left. Some people say I've been radicalized, but I say I've been deprogrammed off of the corporate messaging. What has happened to you? Tom Steyer: I started a business from scratch and ran it for 27 years. I was inculcated with this sense that democracy and capitalism is what gives people freedom and gives people material success. As I'm deprogrammed, as I've seen more of life close up, I can see where corporate special interests are taking advantage of working people. I can see where they're trying to buy our democracy in California, where they're trying to buy the people running for governor. They're successfully controlling outcomes. The oil companies in California are trying to gut the cap and invest program. Donald Trump started a war in Iran and now he’s making $70 billion. A representative for the big oil companies said it was the fiduciary duty of the oil companies to extract every penny from us that they could at the pump. I feel that's pretty gross.
