I say this, and in no means throwing shade at Cursor, but using the new design mode really makes me appreciate the speed of interactions in Figma and Framer. I will absolutely be testing it out in my own workflow, and love that an IDE finally is adding a browser view and selection UX for local dev support, especially one as powerful as cursor... But i'll wait until undo works. I mean... how am I supposed to design without cmd+z?

Pilgrimage Devblog #4 Sound design is crazy hard. If you've "played" previous versions of Pilgrimage, you'll know that the game had just terrible sound design. I've spent the last few days creating new character dialogue using ElevenLabs and some bespoke mixing tools for authentic Old English pronunciation per character. I also added environment sounds for trees, wind, water, carts, animals, and am still working on crowd sounds. Also, I redesigned all of the app UI, unifying it on common components, migrating it to Base UI, changing out the icons, and redoing all of the docs and "internal" tooling that's part of the app and also adding Light/Dark mode. In addition to that, I also redid all of the textures of the app, adding dithering, better shadows, noise to flooring textures, lighting, all doing it with actual performance improvements, which was a big undertaking. There's a ton more misc fixes in the last few days, lots of continued work on characters, I totally refactored all of the building designs, added colors for "factions" and also am currently overhauling the NPC pathing model to better nail the core gameplay loop.

I've gotten tired of dealing with local servers slowing down my laptop, so I built to: - see what local servers are running - how long they've been running - their resource use - notify me if one spikes - auto-kill old servers - give easy ways to launch the local urls - add shortcuts to the Vercel preview url, or Codex/CCode sessions that created it, and shortcuts to resume in my terminal of choice - charts to see spikes (of course) Open source, totally free

Welcome to Tomjohnville. I built a bunch of new portfolios over the last year. Hated all of them. I've told other designers that these should feel like a playground, not a portfolio, and nothing I made felt playful enough. Decided that it was finally time to follow my own advice. So I made my portfolio a game. It's got my whole career. Every place I've worked, with actual people I've worked with for characters, in the real buildings (well the Vercel pyramid isn't real but it should be) and details about my life. Drive my real truck. You can even tow my real camper. (more with this coming soon) Read everything I've written, watch videos I've made. I built a rigging editor to modify the procedural assets with keyframes, automatic tweens, and spritesheet generation. Edits are defined in JSON and passed back into the LLM to update the other character sprites to match the new values.

This is an absolutely absurd level of performance all in the browser. This was me and Astra going back and forth for 6 hours, finding ways to reduce rendering, path finding, edges, hide complexity at higher zooms... I'll cover more of it in my next video. tests are showing 50+ FPS across the board here, I'm now starting to run tests for 10,000+ characters and even larger maps (potentially infinite sized, but more on that later) Check out this PR: Please try it yourself, and tell me if you see perf issues. Try it on your phones, cheap laptops, etc and I'll just keep ripping to make this thing absolute butter.
