Y'all, a personal aside. There was a death a couple of weeks ago and --- for the first time in my life --- last Saturday I was a pallbearer at a funeral. The deceased, Pansy, was related to me by marriage. Friday, the day before Pansy's funeral, I noticed that a wisteria that Pansy planted many years ago was really budding out and looked like it was about to bloom. The next morning, the day of her funeral, I went out and checked it again and it had bloomed --- spectacularly. And while normally I'm not one to engage in metaphysical speculation, I wondered if Pansy might have had something to do with that --- the wisteria she planted blooming on the day of her funeral. Wisterias seem to make good bird habitat and there were little wrens flitting about in the branches and chittering at one another. It was really lovely. Just now I went out and took this video. As you can see the blossoms are still there and they are covered with bees and a few butterflies and I can't help but think that, somewhere, Pansy is smiling.

Y'all take a gander at this! Cibolo Creek Ranch out south of Shafter, Texas got 10 inches of rain and ranch manager Tom Davis kindly sent in this awesome video of Cibolo Falls, the second highest waterfall in Texas, in the aftermath. The falls are spring fed and ALMOST always have water, though in an extreme drought they will go dry. Tom says with this amount of water the falls will be running through late fall, at least. I'd love to go out and camp near them. The sound would put me to sleep in about six minutes. How fantastic is this? Thank you, Tom. This blows me away.

Traces of Texas reader Vance Little kindly sent in this awesome video of Stevie Ray Vaughan playing a live show at the Capitol Theater in Passaic, New Jersey (of all places) in November, 1985. What an uplifting message. He actually plays with his teeth at one point. He really was something else, wasn't he? Thank you, Vance. Nothing like a little Thursday afternoon Stevie to help me battle the mosquitoes in my yard as I set out to mow!

32 years ago today, Robin Ventura learned the hard way. Rule # 1: Don't fight Texans. Rule # 2: Don't fight OLDER Texans. They don't throw punches, they throw decades of hard work at you. Who else thinks this should be a state holiday, like San Jacinto day?

I went to see the great Slaid Cleaves at the Saxon Pub in Austin a few days ago and recorded "Texas Love Song" with my phone. I'm no videographer, and it shows, but Slaid was awesome, as always. He was accompanied by the uber-talented "Scrappy" Jud Newcomb. Bonus points for Slaid yodeling at the end. For you, I’d give up all my time Searching for the perfect rhyme And this is one that certainly perplexes For you, I would spend all my days Thinking up all the crazy ways I love you even more than I love Texas You got Bellaire class and Dallas style Austin soul and a Luckenbach smile For you I’d trade my truck in for a Lexus You smell as sweet as the piney woods I’d marry you if I thought I could I love you even more than I love Texas You’re the barb on my wire The spark in my campfire There’s no brighter star in all the multiplexes I love this state, you know I do But the best thing in this state is you I love you even more than I love Texas Your wit’s as sharp as a prickly pear The sun shines in your golden hair Your smile hits me right in the solar plexus Skin as soft as early morning rain Temper like a gulf coast hurricane I love you even more than I love Texas From the Mucky Duck to the Broken Spoke You know this state like an old cowpoke You know where all the tastiest Tex-Mex is You got Mattson on the radio Playing Robert Earl and Billy Joe I love you even more than I love Texas You’re the barb on my wire The spark in my campfire Let’s head out west where nobody can text us I promise you I’ll never cheat Or you can throw me out in the old mesquite I love you even more than I love Texas And if you make me leave this state I’ll groan but I won’t hesitate ‘Cause I love you even more than I love Texas
