Since Thursday, July 18, Bangladesh has been entirely cut off from the world. Within the country, people in one area are unable to communicate with those in another. Under Sheikh Hasina's orders, a nationwide massacre is being carried out while the Bangladeshi people remain isolated. In an attempt to control the situation, she has killed nearly 500 people, including teenage students, in the last three days. People involved in this #Quota_Reform_Movement have been taken from their homes by law enforcement, and many have been shot dead inside their houses. Despite such brutality, Sheikh Hasina has failed to control the situation and has ultimately imposed a curfew and deployed the military nationwide. The students' movement has now evolved into an uprising, with the spontaneous participation of the general public underscoring the people's unwavering demand for Sheikh Hasina's removal from power. I appeal to the international community to extend a helping hand to protect the people of Bangladesh from the attacks of Hasina's authoritarian and murderous forces. This support will help the country's people restore their lost democracy and human rights. I congratulate the people of Bangladesh for showing a unified passion for democracy today, and securing a victory without even participating in the sham election. What unfolded was not an election, but rather a disgrace to the democratic aspirations of Bangladesh. The irregularities and violence orchestrated by Awami League, along with disturbing pictures and videos from across the country despite the boycott by 63 pro-democracy parties, prove that a free, fair, participatory, and peaceful election under Sheikh Hasina is just not possible. The resounding rejection of 120 million voters, overcoming the regime's threats and intimidations, as evident in a microscopic voter turnout, serves as a public mandate for our struggle to reinstate democracy and a referendum for Hasina's resignation.

Sheikh Hasina’s visit to the vandalised metro station in Dhaka and her violent rhetoric against the so-called mayhem in government establishments across Bangladesh, stands in sharp contrast to her neglect of hospitals and disrespect to families who have lost their beloved children. This occurs in the backdrop of an unprecedented genocide by a combined force of Police, RAB, BGB, Ansar, Army, Navy, Air Force, and Chhatra League terrorists, resulting in the deaths of thousands of innocent students and pro-democracy activists, with countless others assaulted. With incidents of Awami League leaders instructing their party men to torch buses and public establishments in Chittagong and elsewhere in Bangladesh (Manabzamin), it is evident that the Hasina regime itself orchestrated these sabotage attacks to malign the ongoing quota movement, eliminate opposition political parties through fabricated cases, and use mega projects as a tool for corruption by inflating the cost of damages. Questions are being raised across Bangladesh: Since when have public properties become more important than human lives? Can Hasina’s calculated acts of sabotage ever justify the state-sponsored massacre of innocent students? How long will the desperate cries for justice from the victims’ families go unheard? The answers lie in the fact that until there is an elected and accountable government in Bangladesh, Hasina will continue her brutality to cling to power and benefit crony stakeholders.

When I personally speak of reform, I envision transformative change that enhances people’s lives – not mere revisions to a few constitutional paragraphs. 'Reform' for me means ensuring livelihood, socio-economic advancements, and financial security for every family. 'Reform' must address unemployment by creating jobs for all and ensure the dignity, freedom, and empowerment of women and minorities. 'Reform' should guarantee the safety and welfare of all citizens. It must provide our youth with modern education and moral values. It has to deliver the healthcare system that people deserve. It must stabilize the market and control prices of essential goods and services. 'Reform' needs to establish fair wages for farmers, labourers, and people from every working segment of Bangladesh. The people of Bangladesh deserve these transformations in their lives and for the future of their children.

The so-called election without genuine voters, against the will and interest of pro-democracy Bangladeshis, renders the Sheikh Hasina regime as illegal, illegitimate, and unconstitutional. It is an ill-conceived effort to transform the nation into a one-party state, eroding voting rights and fundamental freedoms, and aligning against the democratic world.

The democratic aspiration of Bangladesh is rekindled through the valiant efforts of students, workers, political activists, and ordinary people. However, the spirit of our struggle is being undermined by conspiring factions and vested groups, creating instability and disrupting the democratic transition. I urge the current administration to firmly control the law and order situation, and restore the rule of law, ensuring that every citizen can live safely and without fear. The pro-freedom stakeholders of Bangladesh, including Bangladesh Nationalist Party-BNP, must remain vigilant against this conspiracy, for our hard-fought struggle cannot be bulldozed and blind-sided by the instability. As the largest political party in Bangladesh, with formidable grassroots, I call upon all BNP leaders and activists to stand as resolute shields for their friends and neighbours, regardless of religion, creed or class. We are all Bangladeshis, united in our shared identity, which I’m certain each and every one of us takes immense pride in.

I believe only a government elected by the people, devoted to fulfil their aspirations, can be held accountable and ensure the protection of human rights and the rule of law. Together with all democratic forces, we will restore democracy and voting rights in Bangladesh. #HumanRightsDay #StopEnforcedDisappearance #ExtrajudicialExecutions #DeathInCustody #CustodialTorture #PoliceBrutality

I urge you to provide humanitarian aid to flood victims without regard to their political or religious affiliations. In addition to your personal or party efforts, please also offer your support to the government or local authorities if they request assistance in aiding those affected by the floods. By standing together, regardless of our political, religious, or ethnic differences, and by extending help to those in need to the best of our abilities, we will, with Allah's grace, overcome this crisis. #Flood #FloodInBangladesh

The strengthening of democracy is not rooted in rigid doctrines but in the rhythms of everyday actions, behaviours, and practices of individual societies. Differences in opinions and approaches are inevitable; that is the beauty of democracy. It evolves with the needs of a people. Differences of political opinion or party aside, a common purpose unites us all - the aspiration to build a free, democratic, egalitarian, and humane Bangladesh. In the wake of the student-led and public uprising that toppled the previous autocratic regime, a rare and transformative opportunity has emerged to realise that common purpose. However, this opportunity is fragile. It must not be undermined by the schemes of exiled autocrats and their allies or by unnecessary divisions within the democratic forces dedicated to the nation’s progress. Vigilance and unity are imperative to safeguard this moment of potential. We need to continue putting the country's needs ahead of any personal or political gain. Establishing democratic norms won't be an easy path but I have full faith in the people of Bangladesh and their will to realise that norm.

In the immediate aftermath of 5th August, 2024, a date that will be remembered as the day one of the most reviled authoritarian figures in Bangladesh's history fled the country, I extended my congratulations to the courageous people whose unwavering resolve made this moment possible. At the time, I remarked that a victory is made truly noble when even the defeated can find safety and dignity in its wake. Today, I reiterate that message, urging all democracy-loving citizens of Bangladesh to uphold the principles of justice and restraint. Let no one take the law into their own hands. Let us not glorify mob violence. Let there be no acts of aggression against women. Let us honor one another’s freedoms and dignity. The Bangladesh we strive to build is the one seen through a mother’s eyes, where every citizen, regardless of political affiliation, faith, background, or belief, lives in safety and peace. We envision a nation where believers and non-believers, skeptics and the devout, all coexist under the same promise of security and equality. Let every 5th August henceforth stand as a solemn pledge to the cause of democracy, good governance, and our collective humanity. In this long and difficult journey toward fulfilling that noble promise, both I and my party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party-BNP, seek the continued support and solidarity of all those who believe in democracy, justice, and the future of a truly inclusive Bangladesh.

This “mockery of selection,” not an election, only proves that Sheikh Hasina’s power stems from the state apparatus, and not from the voters who have long been deprived of their rights and freedoms. As the main opposition, Bangladesh Nationalist Party-BNP sees it as our duty to restore democracy and voting rights in Bangladesh, ensuring every citizen’s voice is heard and their participation in the election process is safeguarded. The history of Bangladesh demonstrates that free, fair, participatory, and peaceful elections are possible only when held under a neutral, non-party election-time government. Unless and until we achieve the restoration of this system upon the resignation of Sheikh Hasina, and ensure a real election that the nation and the democratic world aspire, our peaceful and nonviolent movement will continue. Towards that goal, our struggle and sacrifice stand as a testament to the pro-democracy people’s commitment to establish a government truly elected by the people, and thereby fostering legitimacy and accountability.

Regardless of what transpires on 7 January, this Awami League government remains illegal and illegitimate. As the main opposition unifying the nation, BNP is dedicated to restoring the power that was and continues to be unjustly taken away, but rightfully belongs to the people of Bangladesh. We pledge to align economically and strategically with democratic nations and institutions, and implement domestic policies and initiatives to empower all Bangladeshis with freedom, equality and justice. Towards that goal, and with the support of the international community – the pro-democracy people of Bangladesh aim to ensure Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and establish a neutral, non-party election-time government – paving the way for a real election, the election that’ll truly reflect the will of a hundred and twenty million voters.

I extend my heartfelt condolences on the passing of former US President Jimmy Carter, an icon of peace, democracy, and human rights. As a global statesman, his unwavering commitment to justice and equality has left a lasting mark on the world. For Bangladesh, his legacy holds a special place. President Carter's support during our country's formative years and his warm relationship with President Ziaur Rahman were instrumental in strengthening the bond between our nations. His contributions will forever be cherished with deep respect and gratitude. May his life and principles continue to inspire generations to uphold the values of democracy and peace.

To take the ongoing movement to ultimate success, rising above partisan identity, irrespective of party, view, religion, and caste, I call upon every pro-democracy individual to commence non-cooperation with the present illegal government. By ensuring fascist Sheikh Hasina out of state power, a free, fair, impartial, and participatory election will be held in the country.

Today marks the 88th anniversary of the birth of President Ziaur Rahman, a paragon of leadership and valor whose legacy intertwines with the narrative of Bangladesh itself. Ziaur Rahman, the soldier, emerged as a hero during the Liberation War of 1971, displaying unwavering bravery and commitment to the nation's cause by proclaiming independence and fighting the war on the frontline. When there was no one else, he was there to take up the cause of Bangladesh in his name. His remarkable contributions on the battlefield played a pivotal role in securing Bangladesh's independence, earning him the respect and admiration of the nation. As the elected President, Ziaur Rahman steered the nation towards stability and economic prosperity. He implemented crucial policies that fueled economic growth, bringing about the development and nurturing of various sectors, especially the garments and remittance sectors, which continue to be the backbone of the Bangladeshi economy. His government’s policies ensured food security, reduced corruption, and opened new avenues of exports. Recognising the importance of liberal values, he championed the introduction of multi-party democracy back to Bangladesh. His visionary leadership not only shaped the post-war trajectory of Bangladesh but also left a lasting legacy, marking him as the indispensable figure in our nation's history.

Isolated from the people of Bangladesh and the democratic world, Awami League continues to orchestrate state-sponsored violence. Their threats propagate a conspiracy to divert attention and cling to power with an illegitimate election, which is neither participatory nor inclusive. As this violent party’s history suggests and recent spree of incidents prove, the regime’s secret forces are devising strategies to launch assassination attacks and blame the pro-democracy opposition.

Sharadiya Durga Puja, one of the main religious festivals of the Hindu community in Bangladesh and around the world, begins this Sunday. I extend my warmest greetings to the Hindu community of the country on this Sharadiya Durga Puja. May all Hindus across the country be able to celebrate the festival with enthusiasm, joy, with safety and security. I ask that all Bangladeshis, regardless of religion, spread the message of harmony and goodwill. Our party, the BNP, and I believe that religion is for the individual, but the state is for everyone. Religion is for the individual, but the right to security is for everyone. On behalf of myself and the BNP, I once again extend my best wishes to the Hindu community of the country for Sharadiya #DurgaPuja.
