The Indian Army sings in remembrance of its martyrs from the fight against the Japanese invasion. CONTEXT - The song honours Rifleman Badluram of the Assam Regiment, British Indian Army, who was killed in action while fighting the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. After his death, Company Quartermaster CQMH Kandarpa Rajbongshi could not remove Badluram’s name from the ration roster, as Japanese forces had cut off all communications. As a result, rations continued to be drawn in his name. Ironically, this “extra ration” later played a crucial role in sustaining the company during the Battle of Kohima, when Japanese troops surrounded them and supply lines were completely cut off. In honour of this extraordinary circumstance, a song was composed with the iconic line: “We get rations because Badluram’s body is buried beneath.” Sung to the tune of the classic US military song “John Brown’s Body.”
