During an economic forum organised by Bloomberg in New Delhi, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has described India as the “mother of democracy” as his government is accused of arresting thousands of peaceful protesters and restricting free speech. At least 35 media workers covering anti-government protests were arrested in 48 hours this weekend, according to the US-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). Modi claimed that “open discussion happens” in his country, including on social media, despite multiple protests being banned in New Delhi and accusation of censorship on the Instagram pages of the Cockroach Janta Party. On Wednesday, Human Rights Watch published a report denouncing the use of abusive methods to crack down on peaceful protesters and what it described as excessive police violence. “The Modi government should stop throwing young protesters in jail and instead engage with them to address concerns over the right to vote and fairness of elections,” said Elaine Pearson, Asia director at the organisation.

In recent months, more and more Asian countries — including Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia — have complained about the disrespectful behaviour of young Israeli tourists. Every year, thousands of Israeli backpackers join what they call the “Hummus Trail” after serving in the military. But in recent months, the Hind Rajab Foundation said it is actively seeking the arrest of some of these backpackers after gathering evidence of war crimes in besieged Gaza. “Local people start to make the connections that maybe these horrific behaviours have a lot to do with the war crimes committed in occupied Palestine,” Ashley Bao Ngoc, a member of Viet for Palestine, tells TRT

Israeli military machinery has been filmed uprooting olive trees in Kafr Malik, a village near Ramallah in the occupied West Bank. Footage showed bulldozers tearing olive trees from the ground, leaving uprooted and broken trees scattered across the land, with Israeli forces also seen at the scene. The olive harvest in the occupied West Bank officially began on October 15. However, escalating illegal Israeli settler violence, military raids, access restrictions and illegal settlement expansion — including the rapid establishment of dozens of outposts — are increasingly preventing Palestinians from reaching their farms and severing their ties to the land. According to a survey of 29 Palestinian and international organisations operating in the occupied West Bank, 79 percent of NGOs reported that their staff had recently been attacked, threatened or harassed. The Palestinian Colonisation and Wall Resistance Commission said such incidents typically include physical assaults, detentions, beatings, pepper-spray attacks, property theft, attacks on homes, tree felling and road blockages.

Parents are comparing clothes being sold for boys’ and girls’ of the same ages and asking why girls are often offered shorter, tighter and more revealing styles than their male counterparts. Research suggests the concern isn’t entirely anecdotal: One study of 5,666 pieces of girls’ clothing found almost one in three contained characteristics researchers classified as “sexualising”. So why are girls being introduced to adult-coded fashion so early?

Indian authorities demolished sections of the Madina Mosque in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, that allegedly fell in the way of a road-widening project.
