Matthew McConaughey created a four hundred fifty-page analysis, the “Four Stages of Rustin Cohle,” to study his character’s evolution over the course of the story. McConaughey also studied true detectives and watched interrogation videos to understand the body language and behavior of someone who works on complex cases. He also spent hours discussing the character with the creator of the series, Nic Pizzolatto, to ensure that Rust Cohle was a complex and convincing figure.
