After 82 years, a powerful symbol of Estonia’s fight for freedom is finally coming home. 🇪🇪 In September 1944, as Soviet forces advanced on Tallinn, a young Estonian, Eugen Vilder, climbed the flagpole at Kadriorg Palace and rescued the Estonian flag so it would not fall into Soviet hands. For decades, that very flag was preserved far from home in Australia. The blue-black-white had flown over Kadriorg for only a few brief days during the government of Otto Tief — a fragile moment of Estonian independence between the collapse of Nazi occupation and the arrival of Soviet rule. Now, more than eight decades later, the flag returns to Estonia as a reminder of courage, resistance, and the unbroken will of a nation that refused to forget its freedom.

I am in Ukraine to witness how a nation keeps going amid cold and darkness, under constant threat to life, facing loss and horror, with air-raid sirens repeatedly reminding everyone how close the danger remains. Ukraine continues its resistance against brutal aggression, refusing to allow terror and imperialism to prevail. This fight is not only about Ukraine’s security. It is about Europe’s security. Our gratitude to Ukraine for standing its ground is immeasurable, and we will do everything we can to support it. Today, a sign inside a random building said everything Ukrainians are defending. Written plainly on the wall was the size of their country: 603,628 square kilometers. Period.

By doing so, Russia — a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council — blatantly and recklessly violated Estonia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the UN Charter and international law.

We honor the millions who sacrificed their lives to defeat Nazism and remember the immense suffering caused by both totalitarian regimes that devastated the continent. But for Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, and much of Eastern Europe, May 1945 did not bring freedom. It marked the continuation of Soviet occupation, repression, deportations, censorship, and the destruction of national sovereignty for decades to come. Remembering history truthfully is not revisionism. Erasing occupation and calling it liberation is. Yet on this same date, we also remember a different morning. Four years ago, Ukraine awoke to war. It is a painful reminder that freedom does not endure on its own. It must be defended. It must be protected. Freedom means the ability to believe in the future and to live without fear. Today, Ukraine is fighting for that very right. Estonia knows from its own history what it means to lose freedom and what it means to restore it. That is why 24 February is not only a day of celebration. It is also a responsibility.
