(Chris Cenac ’25, Arafan Diane ’26) “They chose here, we don’t recruit a lot of guys. Most people don’t know about our recruiting and that’s the way I prefer it. We kinda work behind the scenes… Recruiting never stops with us, but you know the winningest program in America the last eight years is Houston. It’s because of our recruiting — we have good players. Coaches win a lot of games because they have good players, we have good players and will continue to get good players.”

Kelvin Sampson on the freshman class: "At this point they point they probably have more weaknesses than strengths, because they're not playing against 16-year-olds... If you've noticed our roster we don't have a lot of 16-or 17-year-olds, I don't think (Chris) Cenac has ever played against a Jojo in high school. Same thing with Kingston (Flemings) going against Emanuel... There's always that transition period, where they go from being overwhelmed to being comfortable."

Kelvin Sampson on Kansas: The bell cow in this conference is Kansas, don’t get it twisted… You don’t lose your status because you had an off year or so… I think the best basketball program in America is Kansas, I would take it over anybody else’s program… When you walk into Allen Fieldhouse you’re walking into history. During the transfer portal and this NIL thing, everybody’s going to have a down year.”

Emanuel Sharp on the crowd noise at Iowa State’s Hilton Coliseum: “It’s not the crowd. Iowa State’s a good team, they have a good defense and so do we. I mean it was two good teams, it was 70-67. The crowd — maybe for them, maybe it helped them. We played our game, I thought we played hard and I thought we played smart. It’s just the way the cookie crumbles, they ended up on top.”

All three of them have many more weaknesses than they have strengths. They’re not going to impact games in a positive way until they get through being uncomfortable. It’s going to be uncomfortable for them. Now all of a sudden they’re the fifth option or the sixth option or the fourth option, and that’s a big adjustment for them. Jarace [Walker] wasn’t our first option, he wasn’t even our third… We got guys ahead of all three of these freshmen. If our three freshmen were our three best players, we’d be in trouble… Don’t think for a minute we’re going to be good right away because of them.” Additionally he mentions Bryce Jackson and redshirt freshman Chase McCarty: “They’re doing an awesome job of coming in everyday with the right attitude, they listen, they’re high character kids, they’re trying to be great teammates, but the game right now is a video game for them... Kelvin Sampson on why he continues coaching in the modern era of college basketball: “I’m hard headed about certain things and I refuse to let someone or some entity take my joy for coaching away from me. They don’t get to do that… I think these guys need me and my brethren more now than ever before… I still enjoy teaching the old school things because I think they’re important. I try to adjust and evolve, I think you have to.

Emanuel Sharp on playing for Coach Sampson: "At the end of the day, if you have, you know, a great attitude and you know how to be tough and you can come bring it every day, Coach Samp is the easiest person to play for... If you go against that and you try to do it your own way, you try to, you know, stray away from how we play, then it's going to be hard. But if you have the right attitude like me, Mone (Walker), and Los (Uzan), we've learned how to surrender to the culture and do things the right way."

Kelvin Sampson on Darius Acuff: “Elite talent, elite basketball IQ, elite passer, tough.. He’s as good as any point guard I’ve seen. He just makes everything easier. He gets guys shots, he knows when to go, he knows when to change speeds. The biggest separator for him is his ability to make threes. There’s a lot of point guards that can do everything but shoot. He does it all and he’s tough, competitive. I just been really impressed with him.”

Associate Head Coach, Quannas White - Coach Q will be departing the Houston basketball program after the conclusion of their season to join the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns as their head coach. Players who've developed under White have said nothing but praises. Milos Uzan - "Coach Q, that's my dude. He's going to be a great head coach. He's impacted me a lot. Since I've gotten here he's been telling me I'm the best point guard in the country. He's uplifted my confidence, my game, I've worked out with him every day since I got here. That's family." LJ Cryer - "Honestly I can't thank him enough for what he's done for me. He used to come to my high school every week. I worked out with him every single day, watched film with him and I've also shed tears with him when things were hard. He was always there for me and I love him to death."
