The Holodomor (a man-made famine) of 1932–1933, which claimed millions of lives, was a deliberate policy by the Soviet Union aimed at destroying the Ukrainian nation. This is supported by hundreds of witness accounts, historical documents, and diary entries, which continue to be studied by historians. In this way, Stalin sought to pacify Ukrainian peasants, who had widely protested against forced collectivisation and risen up against the Soviet regime. Deprived of any food, people were forced to eat wild plants. Moreover, in the rare instances when a small amount of grain or vegetables was found, they had to figure out how to make it last for the entire family. In this videos, we share the memories of Ukrainians survivors of the genocide, reflecting on their experiences with food during the Holodomor.
