Umphrey’s has always taken pride in approaching cover songs with the same creativity and precision as their originals. For their cover of Nine Inch Nails’ “Wish,” the lighting design was crafted to honor the energy and intensity of the original performances while still feeling true to an Umphrey’s show. Because “Wish” follows a strict form without improvisation, a detailed cue list was built, inspired by videos of Nine Inch Nails’ live shows. Every hit, bump, and riff was programmed as a simple “Go+,” creating a thrilling, rapid-fire sequence to operate. Keeping the K20 B-Eyes in the design ensured the look remained consistent with an Umphrey’s show rather than a direct replication. The programming even included cues with colorful labels that unleashed full-force white strobes at the song’s most aggressive moments. To protect the crew during rehearsals, the master fader was kept at around 10%—though the crew likely still felt the impact (S/O Bob, Louie, Chris and Robbie). This project was also a technical milestone, as it was built entirely in MA3 mode 3. The recipe-based cue list proved far easier to create, edit, and maintain than in mode 2, ensuring a cleaner workflow for whenever the song makes its way back into rotation.
