Across the world, Muslims continue to face discrimination, hostility, and even violence because of their faith. This must change. Discrimination or hatred directed at any community because of its religion has no place in our society. Today, marking the International Day to Combat Islamophobia, we reaffirm our commitment to dignity, tolerance, and mutual respect. Standing up against Islamophobia is not only about defending one religious community. It is about defending our shared humanity.

On the 10th Anniversary of the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime, I call on Member States to uphold their obligations under the Genocide Convention to prevent genocide and to ensure accountability when it occurs. Genocide anywhere is a threat to peace, security, and human rights everywhere.

The world needs the United Nations, but right now the United Nations needs the world too. Today, I stressed in my speech that my main priority for the next 237 days as President of the General Assembly is to defend the United Nations, its Charter, and the principles enshrined in it. To preserve the UN and save multilateralism, we need to be decisive, principled, and #BetterTogether.

“The decades-long Israeli-Palestinian conflict cannot be resolved by endless war, permanent occupation, and recurrent terror. The only way to ensure that future generations of both Palestinians and Israelis can live in peace, security, and dignity is the two-state solution.”

Slave trade and slavery stand among the gravest violations of human rights in history. Its consequences endure, shaping lives and societies to this day. As we marked the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade in the General Assembly, we reflected on how remembrance can help guide the ongoing pursuit of justice.

The world needs the UN. But right now, the UN and its principles as enshrined in the Charter, need the world, too. Speaking to the European Parliament today in Strasbourg, I called on the EU - and the wider international community - to stand up and support the UN by defending the truth, forming a cross-regional alliance to uphold the Charter and international law, and leading by example through engaging in the UN80 reform process.

Israelis and Palestinians will only live in lasting peace, security, and dignity when they live side by side in two sovereign and independent states, with mutually recognized borders and full regional integration, as outlined in the New York Declaration and Security Council Resolution 2803. But these are only words on paper if we do not deliver. It’s high time to take decisive action. The quest for peace, stability and justice in the Middle East needs our United Nations and requires every Member State to walk the talk: to engage in this process, to uphold the UN Charter, to adhere to international law, and the promise this institution made to all the people of the world eighty years ago.

20 years after its creation, the Human Rights Council meets at a time of growing pushback. Attacks on women’s rights are early warning signs that all human rights are at risk. But human rights are not optional. They are foundational to the UN. Without human rights there can be no peace, no security and no sustainable development. Defending them is the job of all of us. Everywhere.

At the Inter-Parliamentary Union Hearing at the UN, a clear message to lawmakers: Your engagement is required as the United Nations is not only under pressure but under outright attack. Parliamentarians need to stand up for the UN Charter, to support reforming the UN and to get engaged in the process of selecting the next Secretary-General.

At this juncture, the most immediate step is clear – the violence must cease, and further bloodshed must be prevented. I call for the prompt and unconditional release of all hostages, an immediate, unconditional humanitarian ceasefire, and the immediate, unconditional opening of corridors for humanitarian assistance and relief.

With developing countries facing $11.7 trillion in external debt and a $4 trillion SDG financing gap, the urgency is clear. The world does not need us to repeat promises, it needs action. At the 2026 ECOSOC Forum on Financing for Development Follow-up, I stressed that we need to deliver on the promises already made, in particular the 280 actions proposed by the Sevilla Commitment need to be translated into concrete outcomes.
