Post-harvest loss continues to limit the income of smallholder farmers across Nigeria. To address this, Ebubechukwu developed Baza ng, a digital platform that links farmers to consumers, improving market access, reducing waste and strengthening the supply chain. By deploying field agents to onboard farmers from their communities, Baza ng helps ensure produce is visible, accessible and efficiently delivered. Ebube’s solution reflects a growing movement of youth-led innovation transforming agriculture from the ground up. Through the Young Africa Innovates Programme, she has gained mentorship, visibility and a network of peers shaping the future of agritech. The programme implemented by UNDP Nigeria in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation provides technical and financial support to young innovators solving real societal challenges.

Only 10% of Nigeria’s 2.5 million tons of annual plastic waste gets recycled. The rest? It clogs our drainage systems, pollutes our environment and threatens our health. But young innovators like Victoria Francis are changing that, starting from the streets of Akwa Ibom. Through Plastic Cultured, she and her team are turning collected waste into fuel, mattresses and plastic bins. Their innovation is about more than just recycling; it’s about creating jobs, protecting the environment and building cleaner communities for residents and tourists alike. Thanks to the Young Africa Innovates Programme, Victoria now has the support, mentorship and tools to scale her idea and push for a zero plastic waste culture across Nigeria. In partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, we’re empowering atypical and underrepresented innovators especially young women and community-based change makers to build solutions that work.

In Maiduguri, Borno State, charcoal remains a common cooking fuel but it comes at a high cost. It drives deforestation, strains household income and exposes families to dangerous fumes. Khadija is offering a cleaner, more affordable alternative by transforming organic waste into eco-friendly briquettes. Her solution lowers cooking costs, reduces health risks and promotes a circular economy that turns waste into value. Through the Young Africa Innovates Programme, implemented by UNDP, in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, she’s gaining the support needed to expand her impact and bring clean energy options to more households.
