The recent intensified attacks on residential areas by Israeli military in #Gaza has killed & injured dozens of Palestinian children, women & men. Meanwhile, the population remains trapped in an ever-shrinking area, with the “yellow line” constantly being moved westwards by the Israeli military, which appears to routinely fire on Palestinians for mere presence in the vicinity of the line. Deliberately attacking civilians is a war crime.

#Indonesia: We are following closely the spate of violence in the context of nationwide protests over parliamentary allowances, austerity measures, and alleged use of unnecessary or disproportionate force by security forces. We stress the importance of dialogue to address the public’s concerns. The authorities must uphold the rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression while maintaining order, in line with international norms and standards, in relation to the policing of public assemblies. All security forces, including the military when deployed in a law enforcement capacity, must comply with the basic principles on the use of force and firearms by law enforcement officials. We call for prompt, thorough, and transparent investigations into all alleged violations of international human rights law, including with respect to use of force. It is also important that the media is permitted to report on events freely and independently. ➡️

#Nepal: We are shocked by the killings and injury of protesters today and urge a prompt and transparent investigation. We have received several deeply worrying allegations of unnecessary or disproportionate use of force by security forces during protests organized by youth groups demonstrating against corruption and the recent Government ban on social media platforms. We call on the authorities to respect and ensure the rights of peaceful assembly and freedom of expression. All security forces must comply with the basic principles on the use of force and firearms by law enforcement officials. Nepal enjoys a lively democracy and active civic space, and dialogue is the best means to address young people’s concerns. We urge reconsideration of measures to regulate social media to ensure they comply with Nepal’s human rights obligations. ➡️

In 2019, Botswana's High Court struck down laws criminalizing consensual same-sex relations. The landmark ruling was upheld by the Court of Appeal in 2021, recognizing that the laws violated the rights to liberty, privacy, dignity and non-discrimination. Botswana's experience is a reminder that legal victories can transform lives but lasting equality requires more than changing laws. As Letsweletse Motshidiemang, who brought the legal challenge, says, "The struggle is not over." Building societies where everyone can live in safety, dignity and without discrimination also means changing hearts, attitudes and systems.

#Israel’s suspension of multiple aid agencies from #Gaza is outrageous. The pattern of unlawful restrictions on humanitarian access & these arbitrary suspensions make an already intolerable situation worse for the people of Gaza. States must take urgent steps & insist that Israel allows aid to get into Gaza unhindered. ➡️

#Sudan: The UN Human Rights Office is receiving multiple, alarming reports that the Rapid Support Forces are carrying out atrocities, including summary executions, after seizing control of large parts of the besieged city of El Fasher, North Darfur & of Bara city in North Kordofan state in recent days. We need urgent, concrete action to protect civilians seeking safe passage from El Fasher and Bara in Sudan. States with influence must act to prevent atrocities by RSF and allied fighters; accountability is key.
