#Sudan: UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk strongly condemns the escalation in drone strikes this month and their devastating consequences for civilians in Kordofan, Darfur, Blue Nile, Khartoum and other states. He emphasizes that a negotiated settlement, with human rights at its core, is the only feasible pathway to sustainable peace, saying: “I urge both parties to the conflict, and their affiliates, to commit to a ceasefire.”

UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk is concerned by the continuing impact of Israeli military operations on civilians in southern Syria. Israeli authorities should cease actions that harass or intimidate civilians in Syrian villages, including raids, restrictions on freedom of movement, detention and destruction of crops. No person may be detained absent proper basis in international law, and the important procedural guarantees under applicable international human rights and humanitarian law that protect any individual taken into custody must be fully respected.

#Indonesia: We are following closely the spate of violence in the context of nationwide protests over parliamentary allowances, austerity measures, and alleged use of unnecessary or disproportionate force by security forces. We stress the importance of dialogue to address the public’s concerns. The authorities must uphold the rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression while maintaining order, in line with international norms and standards, in relation to the policing of public assemblies. All security forces, including the military when deployed in a law enforcement capacity, must comply with the basic principles on the use of force and firearms by law enforcement officials. We call for prompt, thorough, and transparent investigations into all alleged violations of international human rights law, including with respect to use of force. It is also important that the media is permitted to report on events freely and independently. ➡️

#Bangladesh: We call on the authorities to conduct a prompt, impartial, thorough & transparent investigation into the attack that led to the death of Sharif Osman Bin Hadi, a prominent leader of last year’s demonstrations. Everyone should refrain from violence. Retaliation & revenge will only deepen divisions & undermine the rights of all. ➡️

#Nepal: We are shocked by the killings and injury of protesters today and urge a prompt and transparent investigation. We have received several deeply worrying allegations of unnecessary or disproportionate use of force by security forces during protests organized by youth groups demonstrating against corruption and the recent Government ban on social media platforms. We call on the authorities to respect and ensure the rights of peaceful assembly and freedom of expression. All security forces must comply with the basic principles on the use of force and firearms by law enforcement officials. Nepal enjoys a lively democracy and active civic space, and dialogue is the best means to address young people’s concerns. We urge reconsideration of measures to regulate social media to ensure they comply with Nepal’s human rights obligations. ➡️

#Haiti: Chaos has deep, intertwined roots, fed by greed & impunity – both within Haiti and beyond – UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk calls for a comprehensive approach that looks beyond security. “Those who profit from the current state of disorder are determined to see Haiti fail. They seek to fray its social fabric and destroy the prospects of a stronger State.” #HRC63 remarks:

UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk calls for immediate action on AI governance to tackle unprecedented #HumanRights risks. Industry co-regulation is urgently needed but on its own is nowhere near sufficient. States hosting leading frontier AI companies also have an obligation to require those companies to act responsibly and hold them accountable if they do not. “We are on the cusp of irreversible change, affecting not just us but generations of humanity to come.”

The fall of the Assad government opened a new chapter for Syria, and the enormous task of addressing what happened over more than a decade of war and decades of repression. Where do you begin when families still need to know what happened to missing relatives? When former detainees are still struggling to rebuild their lives? When communities are confronting questions of confiscated property and return? That process is moving forward now. Syria has established national commissions on transitional justice and missing persons. Courts have begun hearing cases involving former security officials, while the examination of mass graves is bringing more information about past violations to light. The country is confronting its history in real time. UN Human Rights is supporting a process led and shaped by Syrians themselves. We are providing expertise and creating space for those affected by violations to take part in decisions about how justice moves forward. The work ranges from accountability and reparation to reforms designed to prevent violations from recurring. The work underway now can help Syria build a future grounded in human rights and the experience of those who lived through its past. Learn more:

People who use drugs have do not lose their human rights. Drug use does not strip anyone of their dignity, nor should it expose people to discrimination, disproportionate punishment, violence or other human rights violations. A human rights-based approach to drug policy means putting people first: protecting health, reducing harm, ensuring fair and proportionate justice, and ending stigma and discrimination. Learn more:

#Yemen: the deepening conflict is taking an appalling toll on civilians. 32 civilians, including 15 children and three women, killed since August. UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk also insists on the immediate release of the 73 UN staff members, as well as others, arbitrarily detained by the ‘Ansar Allah’ group - some for many years. Their ongoing detention, wholly outside the protection of the law, is intolerable and unacceptable. We fear even further for their safety amid this renewed fighting.
