Andy Burnham has sparked a political row during his first visit to Northern Ireland as Prime Minister after he stated that an Irish border poll is “off the table”. Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald reacted strongly to the remarks, stating that no prime minister has the right to “high-handedly” remove the provision for a unity referendum from the Good Friday Agreement. However, DUP leader Gavin Robinson welcomed the comments, stating the Prime Minister had “put to bed the nonsense” speculation over a unity poll.

Kate O'Connor takes home heptathlon gold for Northern Ireland at Commonwealth Games. She delivered NI's first athletics gold since 1986 and has become the games' first new heptathlon champion since 2018. O'Connor finished with 6,569 points, coming out ahead of England's Jade O'Dowda (silver) and Australia's Tori West (bronze).

The DUP's Gregory Campbell has told the Irish President 'you are in our country' during her visit to Londonderry. In a short meeting the MP also challenged President Connolly on what he described as her imbalanced address for only referring to the city as Derry. In their interaction, the President said she is 'here to listen' but Mr Campbell warned her not to rewrite history.
