A German startup called SWARM Biotactics just confirmed it’s deploying live cockroaches as military spy units with NATO customers, including the Bundeswehr. The cockroaches carry AI chips, cameras, microphones, and secure comms on a backpack strapped to their bodies. Operators steer them by sending electrical signals directly into their nervous system through implanted electrodes. CEO Stefan Wilhelm: “one year ago, this didn’t exist” They now have over 40 engineers, $14M raised, and field validated systems inside buildings and tunnels that drones physically can’t enter.
