#VPDNews: The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) is asking for the public’s help to identify suspects in three unprovoked stranger assaults that occurred across the city on Thursday. INCIDENT 1 At approximately 6:10 a.m. at Victory Square, 200 West Hastings Street, a 73-year-old woman was waiting in line for a recycling cup program when a suspect approached and attempted to steal bags containing her recyclable cups. When the victim tried to stop the theft, the suspect punched her in the eye, pushed her to the ground, and stole one of the bags before fleeing eastbound on West Hastings Street near Cambie Street. The victim was transported to hospital in stable condition. The suspect is described as a white woman in her 30s, with shoulder-length dirty-blonde hair with blonde highlights. She was wearing a black jacket, with white sweater underneath, black pants, and white shoes. “We are releasing CCTV images of the suspect and a potential witness in the hopes that someone may recognize them and come forward with more information,” says Superintendent Phil Heard. INCIDENT 2 Shortly before 12:30 p.m. near Commercial Drive and Adanac Street, a 44-year-old man was talking on the phone when he was approached by a man who began making racist remarks. After the victim told the suspect to leave him alone, the man elbowed him in the chin before punching and kicking him. The assault ended when witnesses intervened. The suspect was last seen walking southbound on Commercial Drive. He is described as a dark-skinned man between 40-50 years-old, approximately five foot seven inches tall, with a slim build. He was wearing a grey dress shirt, tan pants, white shoes, and a green cross-body bag. INCIDENT 3 At approximately 6:20 p.m. near Burrard and West Georgia, a 33-year-old resident was walking westbound when a man walking in the opposite direction suddenly struck him on his back. They briefly exchanged words before the suspect fled eastbound on West Georgia Street. He is described as a Black man, approximately five feet nine inches tall, with short black hair and a black beard. He was wearing a green winter jacket and carrying a black backpack. "We are asking anyone who witnessed any of these assaults, has CCTV footage, or can help identify any of the suspects to contact Vancouver Police at 604-717-3321," says Heard.

Friendly reminder: If your pet escapes, give your neighbours a heads‑up. Last night, someone found a serval under their porch. Not a typo. A full-grown African serval cat, which is approximately 3X larger than your typical housecat. Police and conservation officers were called to a home close to Prince Albert and E 30th Ave to assist in getting the oversized “kitty” safely back to its owners.

Rain or shine, B.C.’s liquor laws are the same: there is no open liquor allowed outside of licenced areas and establishments. If your celebrations include alcohol, there are many venues that would be happy to serve you. Don’t let a $230 fine ruin your night. #FIFAWorldCup2026Vancouver

#VPDNews: An assault charge has been approved against a man following an alleged unprovoked attack on a woman on Commercial Drive. The incident occurred at about 6:20 p.m. June 29. The woman was walking near East 1st Avenue and Commercial Drive when the suspect, who was walking in the opposite direction, allegedly elbowed her in the face. Vancouver Police previously issued a release in March 2026, after the same suspect was charged in connection with four alleged stranger assaults against women in the downtown core. Dylan Brandon Gaita, 29, is now charged with one count of assault in relation to the June 29 incident. He is currently in custody. VPD is asking any member of the public who may have witnessed the June 29 incident, or have witnessed a similar incident in the past, to contact police. Investigators believe there may be additional victims who have yet to come forward. “Incidents like this are serious and frightening for victims and witnesses,” says Constable Megan Lui. “Some people may feel too upset to talk to us. We encourage anyone with information to come forward and speak with investigators as they work on this case.”

#VPDNews: The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) is appealing for a potential witness whose Tesla may have recorded video of a senior targeted in a distraction theft on June 23. The VPD issued a release about the distraction theft of the 73-year-old woman whose necklace was stolen in the incident. Investigators canvassed for CCTV at the scene. After reviewing that footage, investigators believe a grey Tesla in the 500-block of Lillooet Street between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. on June 23 may have recorded additional video that could help the case. It’s possible the driver may also have witnessed the incident. “Unfortunately, we’ve seen a number of cases like this in recent months in which elderly people are targeted, and their precious family heirlooms stolen,” says Constable Megan Lui. “These are vulnerable victims just out and about living their lives. We want to be able to retrieve this jewelry and return it to its rightful owner.” Anyone with information is asked to call 604-717-3321 to speak with investigators.

The Vancouver Police Training Academy in the Woodward’s building was officially opened today at a ribbon-cutting ceremony with more than 275 guests and community members attending. “This state-of-the-art Academy represents a new chapter in the history of the VPD and, crucially, in how recruits are trained to become officers who will serve the unique and dynamic policing needs of Vancouver,” said Vancouver Police Department (VPD) Chief Steve Rai. “For the first time since 1978, when the Department last had its own training program, we will be able to fully develop the next generation of police officers in Vancouver -- from the day they join our organization to when they graduate and begin their careers with the VPD.” Forty “Class One” recruits began their studies at the facility in the Woodward’s building at 351 Abbott Street in the Downtown Eastside earlier this week. The students will complete their training and start work in the city on June 25, 2027. Another 40 recruits (Class Two) begin their studies January 18, 2027. “The opening of the Vancouver Police Training Academy is a significant milestone for public safety in Vancouver,” said Terry Yung, Minister of State for Community Safety and Integrated Services. “As a graduate and former trustee of the Justice Institute of B.C., training recruits within the city will give them valuable exposure to the operational environment, diverse communities, and public safety challenges they will encounter throughout their careers. This academy will help prepare the next generation of officers and strengthen public safety for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.” Initially announced in February 2026, the 30,000-square-foot, 3-floor Training Academy received provincial approval in March. Construction in the space formerly occupied by London Drugs began June 1. “The Academy is a foundational addition to the Woodward’s building and to the Downtown Eastside community. Greater police presence in the area is already showing a positive public safety impact with the addition of District 5 operations and will only continue to improve now the Academy is running,” said Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim. “Vancouver’s residents, business, and visitors are clear – safety is a top priority for them. This location was specifically chosen to enhance safety, stability and community in the DTES, Gastown, Chinatown and surrounding areas.” The City of Vancouver provided $4 million in total for the work, which included $2.8 million for the establishment of District 5 and $1.2 million for the Academy. Additional costs are fully funded within the approved VPD budget. “Today’s grand opening is indeed a milestone for VPD recruits and the Department. On behalf of the VPD, I thank the City of Vancouver, the Province, Westbank Properties, and the Vancouver Police Foundation for their support. I also want to recognize the many VPD officers and civilian staff who worked tirelessly over the last four months to build out the Recruit Development Program, including a Vancouver-centric curriculum, and to oversee the construction and all other facets of this project,” said Rai. “Ultimately, the Academy is an investment in public safety. Recruits coming through the VPD Academy will have the exceptional skills Vancouver residents, businesses, and visitors expect from the VPD, and they’ll be ready to deploy across the city the moment they graduate.” The Academy features: A virtual reality room where recruits can work through a multitude of high-pressure policing scenarios, including crisis intervention and de-escalation, mental health, and strategic communications Two large classrooms and two smaller classrooms designed for active learning with smaller cohorts to enhance the instructor-to-recruit ratio A report-writing room where recruits hone administrative capabilities A dedicated police radio channel for communications training A gym that includes a turf floor section for training Athletic therapy space A massage, physiotherapy, and first aid room Cafeteria Courses are taught by nine full-time instructors, all of whom are experienced VPD officers with first-hand experience of the policing challenges of the city. They will teach a provincially approved specialized VPD curriculum. Another nine officer instructors are in place at the Tactical Training Centre, where recruits complete use-of-force training, firearms instruction, and other critical skill-building. Driving instruction is provided by VPD trainers at Mission Raceway. All recruits at the Academy use laptops and work under major case management principles, learning VPD systems from Day One to ensure they are efficient and effective when deployed. The VPD Museum will also move into the Woodward’s building so visitors can learn more about the history of the Department.

Donnellan recognizes the challenges facing the neighbourhood, including the concerns of staff who sometimes feel unsafe when closing up at night. He believes the Academy’s presence, along with the increased foot traffic from recruits, instructors, and staff, will have a positive impact in the area and contribute to a greater sense of safety and security.

#VPDNews: The Vancouver Police Department is releasing CCTV footage and issuing a public warning following a series of "blessing scams" that have targeted elderly residents in the city, resulting in the theft of thousands of dollars in cash and valuables. Investigators have identified at least five separate incidents reported across Vancouver since late May. "These suspects prey on the vulnerability of our seniors, using fear, manipulation, and cultural beliefs to steal their life savings," says Constable Darren Wong. "We are releasing this video in hopes that someone recognizes these suspects, and to remind everyone to speak with their elderly family members about these scams." The latest incident occurred on June 6 near Southwest Marine Drive and Yukon Street. CCTV footage captured an elderly woman being approached by two female suspects after leaving a grocery store. What appears to be a random encounter on camera is in fact a targeted strategy by the scammers. The suspects engaged the woman in conversation, convincing her that a terrible misfortune or curse would soon befall her family. To ward off the bad luck, the suspects offered to perform a spiritual "blessing" on her valuables. She was escorted a few blocks away to meet a third suspect, who instructed her to go home and return with her valuables for the ritual. The victim returned to the scene with over $15,000 in cash and a gold ring inside her purse. Through sleight of hand and distraction, the suspects secretly removed the money and jewelry from her bag without her knowledge. She only discovered the theft after returning home. Blessing scam prevention tips include: 1. Protect Your Space: Maintain physical boundaries. Do not let strangers approach you or enter your personal space, even if they seem friendly or are offering gifts 2. Draw Attention: If you feel you are being targeted, or feel unsafe, make noise, yell, and attract the attention of bystanders 3.Keep Your Valuables: Do not give strangers money or valuables 4. Tell somebody: Call 911 and report the crime to police immediately

Chief Adam Palmer: "This morning I announced my retirement from the #VPD effective April 30. As a kid I always wanted to be a cop, and I’ve lived that dream now for 37+ years. I started in my early 20s as a patrol officer in East Van and worked through many interesting and challenging assignments along the way. "It’s been an honour and a truly humbling experience to serve the past 10 years as the Chief of the Vancouver Police Department, and to work with the finest people I have ever met, the exceptional men and women of the VPD." @ChiefPalmer
