Study: TerraUSD Crash Caused by Coordinated Trading Attack Researchers have found new evidence that the $3.5 billion TerraUSD and $LUNA crash in 2022 was likely caused by a coordinated trading attack. Instead of normal market activity spread across many traders, just a few controlled nearly all trading right before the collapse. This pattern suggests a planned effort to crash the system. The team used a method called temporal multilayer graph analysis to study trading behavior on Ethereum. Their data showed that five or six traders acted in sync, each holding almost the same market share — too precise to be random. They developed the tool with Pometry, a spin-out from Queen Mary University of London. The study was published in ACM Transactions on the Web by Cheick Tidiane Ba, Ben Steer, Matteo Zignani and Richard Clegg.

Stolen Funds Stolen Again A hacker who stole 3,600 ETH from zkLend in February lost most of it recently to a phishing scam. After weeks of silence, the hacker - using the alias "Fake_Phishing927538" - admitted in an on-chain message that they mistakenly transferred 2,930 ETH to a fake Tornado Cash site. ZKLend had previously offered a $500,000 bounty for the hacker’s arrest and fund recovery, but the money vanished before any return. Some suspect the hacker and phishers collaborated, while others see it as an elaborate April Fool’s hoax. There’s no actual proof the hacker and scammers were connected.

Forgery, Fraud and Crypto Corruption in South Korea A Cheongju government official was sentenced to five years in prison for embezzling $342,000 in public funds, including flood relief donations, for crypto investments and personal debts. The fraud lasted six years, using forged documents and the mayor’s seal to open fake accounts and approve fraudulent transactions. Investigation found lax financial controls, with city hall’s official seals left unattended. Meanwhile, lawmaker Kim Nam-guk was acquitted of concealing $6.8 million in crypto holdings after a court ruled that crypto assets were not legally required to be disclosed at the time. Though his financial reports were inaccurate (Kim had reported his total assets a $834,000 in 2021, despite holding nearly $6.8 million in crypto), the judge found no legal basis for obstruction charges. Kim’s undeclared crypto holdings created a serious conflict of interest, as he previously opposed South Korea’s 20% crypto tax on gains. While serving in the National Assembly, he pushed to delay the tax multiple times, aligning with crypto industry interests. His hidden assets raise concerns that he (may) have personally benefited from delaying regulations meant to increase transparency in crypto transactions. As South Korea strengthens crypto fraud enforcement, these cases expose serious loopholes in public sector financial oversight.
