For a long time, I tried to analyse why the masses went gaga over MS Dhoni.. what's so special about him? Was he the first iconic finisher? NO. many would say Michael Bevan. Does he have better wicketkeeping stats than Gilchrist? NO. Did he win more World Cups than Ponting? Again, NO. Then why? Why this madness? So my conclusion was simple — people love him beyond the game. It’s his calm demeanour, the way he carries himself on the field, and above all, the relatability.. (rightly, MS talks about it in 2023 IPL finals.. posted video for reference.) You see MS smashing sixes with long hair in his early days.. it grabs your attention. But then you realise it’s just unfiltered, raw cricket. Nothing orthodox. Nothing manufactured. And years later, after all the mammoth success… did he ever change a bit? Again, it’s a NO. Neither he give fake praises for attention, nor criticise others to stay relevant. He’s the same man who once told Wasim Jaffar, “I want to earn 30 lakhs and retire from cricket and live peacefully in Ranchi.” A man the game discovered… but the people embraced....!!
