32 years ago today. Russell Simmons passed on Nas’ demo, famously claiming that Nas sounded too much like G Rap. translation: great but unsalable. he signed Warren G instead. Illmatic dropped, and is widely regarded as the greatest rap album ever made. Illmatic was the bridge. Melle Mel and Kurtis Blow, to Run-DMC, to Rakim, the Juice Crew, and Big Daddy Kane. now Nas. everyone said he had next since Large Professor brought the chipped tooth kid sporting Gazelles into the studio. the more you listen to Illmatic, the more haunted it feels. when you’re younger, it clubs you with its hail of words and the skeletal beauty of its beats. but the older I get, the more it strikes me as a teenaged requiem for those still living. “Old Soul” is the sort of stock phrase used by yoga teachers and amateur psychics, but it always fit Nas. he’s 20 and prematurely nostalgic, struck by memories of park jams and watching “CHiPS.”, when Shante dissed the real Roxanne, and how much he misses Mr. Magic. Illmatic is a story of a gifted writer born into squalor, trying to claw his way out of the projects. It’s somewhere between The Basketball Diaries and Native Son, but Jim Carroll and Richard Wright couldn’t rap like Nas. not many can. 39 minutes and 51 seconds of perfection.

40 years ago today. October 7, 1986. Def Jam Records. yeah, THAT Def Jam. Rick Rubin dropped T La Rock and the Beastie Boys, then he walked into Hit City West and produced the heaviest record of the decade like he’d been waiting on it. no reverb. no blur. just a pulse. Kerry King said you could finally hear that they weren’t just playing fast, the notes were on time. Rubin’s whole thing was simple: if the music’s that fast and the sounds are that big, it turns into mush. he wanted impact. he got it. 28 minutes and 55 seconds. 10 songs. the whole album fits on one side of a cassette. flip it, run it back. Rick asked them if they realized how short it was. they looked at each other and said “so what?” the runtime is the genius. nothing wasted. Angel of Death (the opening scream on Angel of Death is Tom’s first take. he did more. they kept the first one.) into Piece by Piece into Necrophobic and it never lets you up until Raining Blood caves the roof in. engineered by Andy Wallace (who later mixed Nevermind) Columbia wouldn’t touch it because of Angel of Death. Geffen distributed it and kept their name off the sleeve. no radio, no MTV, and it still hit the Billboard 200. changed how I heard heavy music. before this, heavy had room to breathe. after this, heavy was supposed to feel like a threat. still the standard. happy 40th to the one that ended the argument.

20 years ago today. It was our 5th LP, but I was still just a kid. somehow a grizzled vet while in my 20’s. each record was bigger than the last, but this really blew the door off of its hinges. you never really know what you’re making while you’re making it. when you create something, the work belongs only to the process.

35 years ago today, the Geto Boys release their 3rd LP, We Can't Be Stopped, on Rap-A-Lot Records. one of the most vivid and brutal rap records of all-time. brilliantly self-produced (with help from John Bido and Johnny C), it took only 2 weeks to record. "Mind Playing Tricks on Me" is one of the greatest rap songs ever recorded, and "Fuck a War" is as relevant today as it was 35 years ago. possibly the greatest album cover ever (although Bushwick Bill and Scarface later said they regretted taking the photo). their magnum opus. #RIPBushwickBill

Paul C (September 20th, 1964 – July 17th, 1989) ... #DrumGod #PaulCLives •your favorite producer’s favorite producer• in mid-July of 1989, 24-year-old Queens, New York producer Paul C. McKasty was murdered (by someone he knew) at the one story home he shared with his brother and mother. he was 24 years old. worked on Critical Beatdown and the Mikey D & the LA Posse record..having just engineered Biz Markie’s soon-to-be mega-hit “Just a Friend” and Queen Latifah’s “Ladies First”, in addition to engineering and producing Eric B. & Rakim’s third album” Let The Rhythm Hit ’Em”, Paul sat on the precipice of hip-hop super-producer status at the time of his death. according to an interview with engineer, producer, and frequent collaborator CJ Moore, when Paul died, the world lost “a man who was going to input some of the baddest shit that was ever heard on this planet, because he was that serious.” whatever the motive, the person or people responsible for Paul’s death were never brought to justice. despite having his murder featured on America’s Most Wanted and the subsequent arrest of suspect Derrick “Little Shine” Blair in February of 1990, no convictions were made and McKasty’s case remains open today. adding to the situation’s cruel finality, the beloved 1212 Studio located at 92–32 Union Hall St. in Jamaica, Queens – where Paul made the bulk of his music while he was alive–was ravaged by a fire six years after his murder, further obscuring his place in hip-hop history. his legacy and impact grows for those closest to him. on August 26th, 2015, Nick Hook collaborator Recloose shared a photo of Large Professor sitting with Paul’s SP-1200 for the first time in many years. you can see Large Pro lost in thought, staring at his teacher’s favorite piece of gear, a melancholy look on his face–perhaps pondering what might have been if Paul were around today. happy bornday Grand Puba Maxwell. there’s an argument to be made that from 88 (Masters of Ceremony), to 95 (2000), he was the best rapper on the planet. along with the Lo-Lifes, Puba was also a MASSIVE influence on hip-hop fashion. one of the most effortless flows of all-time.

31 years ago today, Ol' Dirty Bastard releases his debut LP, Return to the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version, on Elektra/WMG. the third shot fired in the Wu revolution, Dirty may well be the most original vocalist in hip-hop history. the beats on here? some of RZA’s finest work. True Master and 4th Disciple, as well. nominated for Best Rap Album at the 1996 Grammys. a mad genius at work. my favorite album cover of all-time.
