32 years ago today. Russell Simmons passed on Nas’ demo, famously claiming that Nas sounded too much like G Rap. translation: great but unsalable. he signed Warren G instead. Illmatic dropped, and is widely regarded as the greatest rap album ever made. Illmatic was the bridge. Melle Mel and Kurtis Blow, to Run-DMC, to Rakim, the Juice Crew, and Big Daddy Kane. now Nas. everyone said he had next since Large Professor brought the chipped tooth kid sporting Gazelles into the studio. the more you listen to Illmatic, the more haunted it feels. when you’re younger, it clubs you with its hail of words and the skeletal beauty of its beats. but the older I get, the more it strikes me as a teenaged requiem for those still living. “Old Soul” is the sort of stock phrase used by yoga teachers and amateur psychics, but it always fit Nas. he’s 20 and prematurely nostalgic, struck by memories of park jams and watching “CHiPS.”, when Shante dissed the real Roxanne, and how much he misses Mr. Magic. Illmatic is a story of a gifted writer born into squalor, trying to claw his way out of the projects. It’s somewhere between The Basketball Diaries and Native Son, but Jim Carroll and Richard Wright couldn’t rap like Nas. not many can. 39 minutes and 51 seconds of perfection.

35 years ago today, NWA release their second and final studio album, Niggaz4Life, on Ruthless/Priority. this shit hit different. my favorite Dre-produced LP. the most nihilistic, apolitical recordings since the Nixon tapes. still dangerous after 3 1/2 decades.

32 years ago today, Jeru the Damaja releases The Sun Rises in the East on Payday/FFRR/ PolyGram. Preem was in full god-mode with weird, experimental textures that felt fresh even back then, giving Jeru the perfect canvas to throw his darts on. pure ingenuity that made a lasting impression, and one of the strongest debut albums in hip-hop history.

36 years ago today, Ice Cube released his debut solo LP, AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted, on Priority Records. famously produced by the Bomb Squad, it’s as loud, noisy, and angry as anything you’ll find on “Fear of a Black Planet”. AMW is one of the first records to change the dynamic of social justice in rap music (thanks to the influence of Public Enemy). 5 Mics in The Source (when it mattered), and one of the best hip-hop records ever.

happy bornday Grand Puba Maxwell. there’s an argument to be made that from 88 (Masters of Ceremony), to 95 (2000), he was the best rapper on the planet. along with the Lo-Lifes, Puba was also a MASSIVE influence on hip-hop fashion. one of the most effortless flows of all-time.

True Master and 4th Disciple, as well. nominated for Best Rap Album at the 1996 Grammys. a mad genius at work. my favorite album cover of all-time.

34 years ago today, the Geto Boys release their 3rd LP, We Can't Be Stopped, on Rap-A-Lot Records. one of the most vivid and brutal rap records of all-time. brilliantly self-produced (with help from John Bido and Johnny C), it took only 2 weeks to record. "Mind Playing Tricks on Me" is one of the greatest rap songs ever recorded, and "Fuck a War" is as relevant today as it was 30+ years ago. possibly the greatest album cover ever (although Bushwick Bill and Scarface later said they regretted taking the photo). their magnum opus. #RIPBushwickBill

34 years ago today, Gang Starr release their 3rd LP, Daily Operation, on Chrysalis Records. lyrically, musically, and visually, Daily Operation is one of the more culturally rich hip-hop records ever. Preem’s production is a tribute to multiple decades of black music, and Guru is in top form. “Take it Personal” stands alone as possibly one of the five songs that define the signature sound of the group with an impeccable catalog, 34 years later it still stands as one of the best examples of top-tier lyricism over flawless production. like the rest of their work, Daily Operation raised the bar artistically upon its release in the spring of 1992, inspiring heightened cultural awareness and somehow making it all look easy, like just another day in the office for hip-hop’s greatest MC/DJ combo. an absolute perfect record and my personal favorite from their (brilliant) discography. listen to it today, and bask in its glory.

31 years ago today, a brilliant exploration through the urban landscape of New York’s housing projects from the perspective of a young, black male. a massive part of the East Coast Renaissance, along with Enter the Wu-Tang, Illmatic, and Ready to Die. reset the standard not only for New York, but for rap itself. it continues to be that flawless body of work, as well as a blueprint.
