I think something people miss about this scene is that Whitaker is NOT copying Robby’s lesson to the letter. Robby’s original advice was: “You learn to live with it, learn to accept it, and try to find balance if you can.” But that’s not quite what Whitaker says: “You try to accept it and try to find balance.” Key difference being that Robby’s lesson was to LEARN to accept it and live with it. But Whitaker says you have to TRY to accept it, because he still hasn’t found a way to accept death. It still hits him as hard as it did with Mr. Milton. He also completely omits learning to “live with it” because I think for Whitaker it’s something he rejects completely. He doesn’t want to “live with” the fact that people die.. he wants to PREVENT IT at all costs. The only thing Whitaker still agrees on is that you have to try and find balance. Something he continues to try to do. He can’t give the advice exactly because he hasn’t implemented it himself fully yet. I found that pretty interesting.
